Had an email from a friend who has lived in Cyprus for the past 10+ years, copying part of it here.
From the word go, Cyprus has grabbed the bull by the horns and reacted very quickly to the pandemic with enforced lockdowns, restrictions and heavy fines for offenders. On a daily basis, I have to fill in and sign and date a government form depicting my reasons every time I am leaving the house. I also have to get an SMS text message from the government. I have to declare my home address and passport number, post code etc before I can leave my house. We are restricted to how many times I can go out in a 24 hour period. It was once a day but they have now extended it to two. I have been stopped by the police three times checking my paperwork. All restaurants tavernas etc are closed. It is annoying and disruptive but I live with it.
SHINE
Each day you shine
When you stretch and rise
You breathe new life
The greatest prize
For some it is done
The heart beats no more
And a loved one sobs
For what came before
This life is a blessing
Cherish each day
Live for the moment
Don't wish it away
Turn your collar to the wind
Laugh in the rain
Grasp this moment
It won't happen again
You are unique
One of a kind
Unpack lifes baggage
Just leave it behind
We are all beautiful
So please never forget
Each moment we waste
We will someday regret
The day you were born
The stars did align
One way or another
You are here to shine

What happens to people not contacted for vaccination?
I am in category 3 and my friends in category 4 had been vaccinated and given an appointment for their second vaccination. I was dutifully waiting to be contacted, as we are all instructed, but just a bit concerned as it was the trust, not the surgery, who contacted my husband in category 1. He had his first vaccination on December 31st but was not given a second date. My son persuaded me to ring the surgery to check I was on the list
I was a bit reluctant, as I have had two run-ins with the practice manager, recently ((the first time, she criticised a dr who had been incredibly helpful on the phone, saying the dr had given me the wrong advice, and she was going to make an official complaint and insist the dr apologise to me! I said I didn't need an apology, that the paramedics present and the dr on the phone had been helpful - in fact, I was so concerned about this lovely, new doctor I wrote her a personal letter of thanks, without mentioning the practice manager's involvement. The second time, I was told I shouldn't be with the practice as I was the wrong postcode - and why hadn't I changed dr when we moved house. I explained we registered 40 years ago when we moved to Essex. She said I shouldn't be with them, and would have to change, eventually. I was upset and cross but decided to ignore it)
Anyway, I plucked up courage this morning, got through and explained, and asked if it was possible to check if I was on the list. The receptionist just checked name and date of birth and offered me an appointment at 8.15 on Sunday morning at a heath clinic in the town. I was just expecting to be told I was or wasn't on the list. But basically we are told not to ask ......
Also, wondering whether to complain nicely about practice manager as if it has made me reluctant to phone, and I am fairly resilient, and have worked for an NHS Deanery in the past, then how do people feel who are less confidant than I am - it becomes a matter of health and safety if people are put off contacting their gp practice.
Apologies for lengthy post, but any thoughts?

Even during the war but last year was the first time the village could not celebrate their Saints day. We collect petals and make designs all through the one road in the village. My sister in law lives there ( she paid £12,000 for a 3 bedroom now 3 bathroom house) and my husband’s friends live there too. Then my cousin from Switzerland bought a home. . We take friends to help us with the petal picking.

Over the last few days I have heard lots of colleagues who have taken the steps to book a holiday abroad for this summer.
I asked one why and her reply was that she needed something positive to look forward to and wanted to be optimistic.
I fully understand this, the yearning to do something nice and have some normality. I myself wouldn’t risk booking a holiday. Not just because of lockdowns etc but because I think I would still be wary of being on a plane etc with the virus.
So , my question to you all is...
Have you booked? Where have you booked? If so, what tipped your decision to booking this soon?
A national census is taken every 10 years in the Uk. The next will be on 21st March 2021. There will be many questions asked that have never been asked before. Further information can be found at: census.gov.uk
It has been annouced the British Athletics Indoor Championships is cancelled and a number of music festivals have been cancelled.
Do you think the 2021 Tokyo Olympics will go ahead?
I like to watch the British Athletics. Will you miss watching any of the events?
I've just seen a post on FB from a clinic offering free spine checks this Saturday. They are asking people to book up and go to the clinic. We are only supposed to be going out if absolutely necessary. Unless you're in dreadful pain and can't get any help I can't see it's necessary right at this moment.

Why am I not surprised? One dose vaccination strategy in doubt
As soon as the delay of second doses was announced, I was instantly suspicious that it was more of a political decision, a panic reaction - than a carefully considered medical strategy.
Of course, here in the UK we're high up in the race to get our population vaccinated, or that's what it looks like. Still, we're an experiment (lab rats?) with the rest of the world watching.
Will it work or won't it? Will the 'vaccinated' - half-vaccinated with a single dose, feel 'safe', believe the problem's solved and abandon social distancing, masks and hand washing? Will they mix with friends and family? Will they catch Covid? What are the outcomes for the 'first dose only' victims?

There are still some good people out there
I thought I would share something nice in the middle of this worrying time .
I am part of a group elsewhere that is about cooking on a budget. Everyone shares tasty recipes that are cheap.
Last night a young lady listed a small amount of food and said she has that and £10 to last a week as her food shop had fallen through. She simply asked everyone for some meal ideas for her kids. Within an hour she had multiple offers of help, resulting in a lady who lived 10 minutes away from her dropping a “care package “ of food on her doorstep. The lady was overwhelmed at this act of kindness, the lady who donated the food simply said “ I have enough”

Can we travel at the speed of light ?
No, we cannot travel at the speed of light.
If an object travels at the speed of light, its mass will increase exponentially ! The speed of light is 186,282 miles per second and when an object moves at or close to this speed, its mass will become infinite. Therefore, infinite energy will be required to move the object, which is an impossibility. That is the reason why no object can move at the speed or faster than the speed of light.
Excepting the Sun our nearest star is Proxima Centauri at 4.22 light years away from us. This isn't a single star, it's actually a triple-star system — three stars bound together by gravity. Alpha Centauri A and B are two bright, closely orbiting stars with a distant, dim companion named Proxima Centauri. .That is almost 78,000 years travelling at a speed of the Voyager space probe of around 37,000 mph . Other stars are tens, hundreds, thousands, millions or even billions of light years from us.
Mars is currently NASA's dream child of a manned visit. Mars is 34.8 million miles from Earth at its closest orbit. At a speed of the Voyager space probe of around 37,000 mph, it would take 128 - 330 days to get there dependent on circumstances and the same to get back. The whole prospect of serious space travel is a theoretical pipe dream.
Because of the mega-distances involved between planets, stars and galaxies, unless in the distant future an astrophysics means of bending space/time is found ( another pipe dream ), space travel is nothing more than an interesting but impossible dream.
By the same principles, it completely rules out the slightest possibility of any Alien visitors ever visiting Earth.
Our knowledge is curtailed entirely to what we can see and reach - there it stops dead at infinity.

We just had a delivery from Sainsbury's, and I asked what happens if the customer is not in when you arrive. He said that if they arrive at the correct time, and the customer is not in, all the food is thrown away, and they are not charged for it!
Sharpening or honing kitchen knives.
just read this about a Gordon Ramsey video.
“I’m afraid he’s wrong. And that’s not the only thing that he’s got wrong on the video. He didn’t sharpen a knife, he honed it. Sharpening removes material from the blade, honing just stands up the edge that might be bent over.”
How do you sharpen your knives?
I can remember my old Dad had a cut throat razor. He would sharpen (or hone) it on a leather strap!!
How does that work?
Taken from a comment in Which email
I found this interesting
Intriguing. I have just searched for ‘Best Rate ISA’.
The top results were
1. Moneysavingexpert
2. Comparethemarket
3. Moneysupermarket
4. Which
5. Moneyfacts
All relevant and trustworthy websites I think which can give me more information.
So why didnt I see any suspicious websites or ads?
Must be because all searches I carry out are through DUCKDUCKGO.COM and NOT GOOGLE.
Look, first and foremost Google is a TRACKING company not a search engine.
Google trackers are lurking behind the scenes on 75% of the top million websites (and yes most likely Which.co.uk too) Even Facebook only has 25%!
I found these interesting facts and a lot more on ‘spreadprivacy’.
Search for it, but not through Google as goodness knows what it would show you.

I wrote to my MP asking if he could initiate collection boxes at immunisation centres. Money could be used for so many needy causes e.g. food banks. --- would you give? ---
Please email your MP. Many requests might make a difference.
At the same time I mentioned I do not agree with hospital parking charges going to private enterprise. If the hospitals benefits this would be more acceptable.

Since 29 December, EU countries are subject to international postage rules. What this means in practice is that you'll need to attach customs declaration forms on all packages being sent outside of the UK. You can download these online or find them at your local branch. However, if you're sending from Northern Ireland to the EU or Great Britain, customs forms are not required.
Did your house rattle earlier today?
Was early this afternoon like someone really banged hard on the front door to make internal doors rattle. But nobody was at the door.
Then 15 minutes later my phone pinged with news that people from London to Cambridge heard a sonic boom from a fighter jet. So that was it.
I posted this a few years ago but many of you may not have seen it.
It is very easy, for me and others, to find your personal details and your address and phone number could be one of the easiest. You may have already removed some of your information but if you have not or have moved home, you should check again and start with 192.com.
If you are listed, you need to fill the "Removal of Personal Data from 192.com" form. No need to join or subscribe. You will get an email to which you should reply to confirm removal and your personal details will be removed.

This is only one way scammers and fraudsters find your details and there are many others.

Using your, or a family photo as your avatar on Scooploop, or any other public website (Edited)
For various reasons, personal safety and misuse, it is not wise to use a personal, or family photo on Scooploop, or any other public website/forum. A public website is one where anyone can view the contents simply by joining it. Facebook is a private website, unless you choose to make its contents public. Even if it is private, in some people's cases, how many of those friends are real friends? You should also never post any personal information whatsoever on a public website, as it can be used by someone that means you harm, or make use of it in some other way.
