BREAKING🚨 Plans to close hundreds of rail ticket offices in England have been scrapped by the rail companies and the Department for Transport. [1]
Lonicera, this is brilliant news! In a major U-turn, plans to close almost every ticket office in England have just been dropped. [2] You were one of the 121,000 of us who took part in the campaign, so we wanted to say thank you! [3]
Rail operating companies thought they would be able to sneak these plans through without anyone noticing. Despite making millions in taxpayer-funded profits, they were determined to shut these offices at the expense of passengers - and the Government was prepared to let them do it. [4]
That’s where you came in, Lonicera. Just like we’ve done on so many campaigns throughout the years, the 38 Degrees community lept into action:
680,000 people responded to the official consultation, including more than 26,000 38 Degrees supporters. [5]
Over 114,000 of us signed the petition to put the needs of passengers over profit and keep our train ticket offices open. [6]
We flooded the inbox of the Rail Delivery Group’s CEO with 4,000 messages.
We went to the Rail Delivery Group HQ to hand in the petition, accompanied by a special guest. [7] -

China - A Fully Fledged Member of the Space Club
China has developed a broad program for Earth observations, navigation, communications, weather forecasting, and materials processing. China achieved space superpower status in 2003 when Yang Liwei flew into orbit.
China overtook Europe in launchings per year and, in 2011, surpassed the United States. China is now a great space superpower alongside the United States and Russia, sending men and women into orbit, building a space laboratory (Tiangong) and sending probes to the Moon and asteroids.
Roadmap 2050 promises that China will set up bases on the Moon and Mars and lead the world in science and technology by mid-century. -
Today, the Isle of Man’s Assisted Dying Bill passed its Second Reading with an historic vote of 17 to 7. MHKs have heard the overwhelming call for change from the Manx people and voted yes to dignity.
This means the Isle of Man is on the path to becoming the first part of the British Isles to legalise assisted dying. It joins countries like Australia, New Zealand and the US by acknowledging that dying people deserve choice at the end of life. This is a huge victory.
The Bill will now progress through further stages of scrutiny, consultation and debate. Assisted dying could be available as a choice for terminally ill islanders in 2025.
It wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible work of supporters in the Isle of Man. Whether it was writing to members of their parliament, telling their stories to local media, or attending the demonstration this morning, everyone has worked so hard. A huge thank you to you all for everything you’ve done to support the campaign.
But it’s not over yet. Lonicera, will you invite a friend to join our campaign for dignity and choice at the end of life? -
Royal Mail (Edited)
I heard the bell ring at the front door, opened it to see a Royal Mail parcel van in the road and two employees sorting through the van, obviously looking for the parcel. Neither glanced my way. Waited at the porch door for a couple of minutes, then went inside, leaving the front door open. Looked out a few minutes later and the van had gone. Just switched on to see email saying Parcel delivered at 11.08 and left in safe place. Nothing anywhere that I could think of. Have been told twice on automated system that the parcel has been delivered, now waiting to speak to a person, current waiting time 30 minutes they say, so far on hold for past 20 minutes - am I annoyed, yes.

Big Government v. Small Government?
I recently heard Baroness Warsi explaining why she’s still a Tory despite hating most things about the current government. She explained that she was a Tory because she believed in small government (I think she used the term small state) and believed in individual hard work, taking personal responsibility, etc. etc. I know similar views have been expressed on SL a fair few times.
This set me thinking about the role of government. I believe in all the things she referred to, such as hard work, families and communities helping themselves, but I think the idea of small government is something of a myth. And used at election time in a dishonest way. The last few Tory governments have been anything but ‘hands off’. As an example, they have encouraged such things as free schools, run outside of the state system, whilst simultaneously interfering in education like never before.
Can we ever truly have a small state? -

IS MONEY ON THE MOVE?
The title question is posed as those that study the financial gurus will have observed that they are indicating resurgence in the bond market which has been unattractive for some time.
Two weeks ago I had a meeting with my financial adviser which resulted in the revision of our portfolio requirement from –maximise income with capital growth to match inflation, to a more capital growth configuration, which meant discarding funds that produced 72% of annual investment income in favour of better growth oriented investments.
This decision is based on the assumption that Labour will win the next election, judging by the by-election results (not known at the time) seems even more likely, therefore with Labour historical ability to always screw up the economy, protective action is necessary.
It would appear that Stammer’s current approach of promising people what they want rather than what they can afford, is already causing the markets to close ranks and when, rather than if, they do then his promises will be even more hollow. Without the markets’ support he can’t govern, Liz Truss proved that.
One has to recognize that in taking investment action of this kind there are risks, however on balance it is fairly certain that if it is wrong the losses will only be an odd thousand or two whereas if it is right it will almost certainly stop 10’s of £1000’s being wiped off our savings.
Finally, this post is not intended to be considered as financial advice, but it might prove helpful in provoking some thought, and is backed up by the fact that I have put our money where my mouth is. -
Thank you again to those of you
Who contribute to kind donations to help out the many cats in need i help.
At present the situation is rather desperate.
No space for all. No help for all.
Busy non stop i no longer find time to describe some of the situation. Rehoming to people who have no intention of offering a forever home is mostly the cause of the problem and of course people who do not get their cats neutered. -
My mum used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on bread on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.
Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e. Coli
Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake or at the beach instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.
We all took PE ..... And risked permanent injury with a pair of Dunlop sandshoes instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors that cost as much as a small car. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.
We got the cane for doing something wrong at school, they used to call it discipline yet we all grew up to accept the rules and to honour & respect those older than us.
We had 50 kids in our class and we all learned to read and write, do maths and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter......., FUNNY THAT!!
We all said prayers in school irrespective of our religion, sang the national anthem and no one got upset.
Staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention we wish we hadn't got.
I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.
I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations. We weren't!!
Oh yeah .... And where was the antibiotics and sterilisation kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!
We played "King of the Hill" on piles of gravel left on vacant building sites and when we got hurt, mum pulled out the 2/6p bottle of iodine and then we got our backside spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10 day dose of antibiotics and then mum calls the lawyer to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.
To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?
We never needed to get into group therapy and/or anger management classes. We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac!
How did we ever survive?
LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA. AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T, SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED.

It's never as many as they say
On much food packaging there is often a figure telling how many servings. I've never managed to make the food item last as long as they say.
Recently I bought Dorset Cereals porage. It said 7 serving. the box was finished after 5 breakfasts.. -

A tear jerker from the wonderful James Stewart
A Dog Named Beau by James Stewart (from Jimmy Stewart and His Poems) Crown Publishers, 1989
He never came to me when I would call
Unless I had a tennis ball,
Or he felt like it,
But mostly he didn’t come at all.
When he was young
He never learned to heel
Or sit or stay,
He did things his way.
Discipline was not his bag
But when you were with him things sure didn’t drag.
He’d dig up a rosebush just to spite me,
And when I’d grab him, he’d turn and bite me.
He bit lots of folks from day to day,
The delivery boy was his favorite prey.
The gas man wouldn’t read our meter,
He said we owned a real man-eater.
He set the house on fire
But the story’s long to tell.
Suffice to say that he survived
And the house survived as well.
On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,
He was always first out the door.
The old one and I brought up the rear
Because our bones were sore.
He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on,
What a beautiful pair they were!
And if it was still light and the tourists were out,
They created a bit of a stir.
But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks
And with a frown on his face look around.
It was just to make sure that the old one was there
And would follow him where he was bound.
We are early-to-bedders at our house–
I guess I’m the first to retire.
And as I’d leave the room he’d look at me
And get up from his place by the fire.
He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs,
And I’d give him one for a while.
He would push it under the bed with his nose
And I’d fish it out with a smile.
And before very long
He’d tire of the ball
And be asleep in his corner
In no time at all.
And there were nights when I’d feel him
Climb upon our bed
And lie between us,
And I’d pat his head.
And there were nights when I’d feel his stare
And I’d wake up and he’d be sitting there
And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair.
And sometimes I’d feel him sigh
And I think I know the reason why.
He would wake up at night
And he would have this fear
Of the dark, of life, of lots of things,
And he’d be glad to have me near.
And Now he’s dead.
And there are nights when I think I feel him
Climb upon our bed and lie between us,
And I pat his head.
And there are nights when I think
I feel that stare
And I reach out my hand to stoke his hair,
But he’s not there.
Oh, how I wish that wasn’t so,
I’ll always love a dog named Beau.

A woman decided to give herself a big treat for her 70th birthday by staying overnight in a really nice hotel.. When she checked out the next morning, the desk clerk handed her a bill for $250.00.
She demanded to know why the charge was so high "I agree it's a nice hotel, but the rooms aren't worth $250..00 for just an overnight stay - I didn't even have breakfast!"
The clerk told her that $250.00 is the 'standard rate,' and breakfast had been included had she wanted it.
She insisted on speaking to the Manager. The Manager appeared and, forewarned by the desk clerk, announced: "This hotel has an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center which are available for use."
"But I didn't use them."
'Well, they are here, and you could have." He went on to explain that she could also have seen one of the in-hotel shows for which they were so famous."We have the best entertainers from the world over performing here."
"But I didn't go to any of those shows.."
"Well, we have them, and you could have."
No matter what amenity the Manager mentioned, she replied, "But I didn't use it!" and the Manager countered with his standard response.
After several minutes discussion, and with the Manager still unmoved, she decided to pay, wrote a check and gave it to him. The Manager was surprised when he looked at the check.
"But Madam, this check is for only $50.00"
"That's correct I charged you $200.00 for sleeping with me."
"But I didn't!"
"Well, too bad, I was here, and you could have." 🤣 -
