I have BBC Radio 3 on all day while I'm working, as classical music doesn't distract me from rearranging words on a page. But I did listen more closely to this lovely programme with Jools Holland and artist Glen Baxter, which has some uplifting jazz as well as classical https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m002mc0t It made this truly miserable-weather day seem sunnier. -

I feel fairly sure that few or none of us largely elderly folk engage in this modern habit, but this link might be useful to pass on to daughters/granddaughters https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/nov/18/sexually-active-young-people-uk-choking-strangulation-sex There’s a further link below the piece, I think. -

This is fascinating stuff, or at least I think so: https://www.livescience.com/archaeology/medieval-hungarian-duke-was-murdered-in-a-brutal-and-coordinated-attack-forensic-analysis-reveals Incredible that experts can find out so much detail. I had no idea that eating seafood could throw off radiocarbon dates (why would I have?) -

Does anyone have a particular recommendation? I normally dream up my own passwords, which I keep in a locked Word doc (not named 'Passwords'!) but had an alarm the other night when I got a pop-up on a Safari page saying my Mac had been hacked – I swiftly crashed it then created a new password to get into it. Today I've been told by a knowledgeable friend that didn't necessarily mean it really had been hacked, but I'm wondering if a password manager might be a good idea - though Intego should warn me of any intrusion and did, if indeed it was hacked. I don't know what a warning from Intego would look like, as opposed to the pop-ups my friend referred to. (Does any of that make sense? I've been fretting over this for some while this afternoon and am losing it altogether, I think!) Anyway, Roboform, Nordpass and 1Password seem to be well-recommended password managers. -

This morning I was feeling fed up about all the things going wrong with my house until I read this. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2025/oct/29/no-more-children-are-going-to-die-like-you-how-sheffield-mother-kept-her-promise-to-boys-killed-by-father-11-years-ago That poor woman - I hope she manages to find some happiness in the rest of her life. -

I've just had a reminder about this, which I did actually already know about (though it's quite conceivable I wouldn't have done, being terminally vague in some respects). I could never remember which way they were supposed to go, until someone said to me 'Spring forward, fall back' - so I'm just offering that here in case anyone else is similarly clock-challenged! -

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/oct/13/tommy-robinson-says-elon-musk-is-paying-his-legal-costs-as-trial-begins I find it deeply worrying that the richest man in the world is willing to pay legal fees for British far right activists - and is therefore probably willing to fund them in other ways too. -

Would anyone else like to sign the petition to get this disgraceful woman chucked out of the House of Lords? https://act.38degrees.org.uk/act/expel-Mone-2 When I signed it, others seemed to be signing at a rate of about one or two per second! Then I want all her profits from her unfit-for-use Covid product removed from her. -

Facebook just presented me with this - Carole King, Aretha Franklin and the elegant, sophisticated Obamas compared to the crude, greedy lout in charge now. https://www.facebook.com/reel/1860916141427719 See the comment below it, from someone who has to live with it (though given the power of the US, we all do). -

A message appeared on my screen saying that my ukpowernetworks account had been accessed and I should create a strong password - or something to that effect. Immediate panic so I can't now recall in what form the message appeared, nor can I find it! It's not in my email inbox. Microsoft Word was also mentioned - I do have my password for ukpowernetworks in a Word doc but that is also password protected and I think wasn't open at the time. Has anyone else had anything similar? -

From the Guardian: “Competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work,” wrote Darren Beattie, who now has a senior job in the state department, on X in October. “Unfortunately, our entire national ideology is predicated on coddling the feelings of women and minorities, and demoralizing competent white men.” Obviously Beattie thinks he's competent - others of us might think he's lacking some brain cells. -

Here’s a long and very interesting piece on Donald Trump by Sidney Blumenthal https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/mar/09/sycophancy-toadying-trump-self-aggrandizement It could have done with a little copy-editing in places to reconstruct a few sentences to make them clearer, but I dare say the Guardian may have agreed to leave it untouched. It really is a horrifying tale. Would the British electorate vote in such numbers for someone so appallingly unsuitable? I do hope not. And I really, really wish someone would assassinate Trump before more damage is done. -
