Does everyone here already know this big disadvantage to using PayPal? I didn’t, and have used it a lot to buy goods just using a password rather than typing in my credit card number - I also thought it might be safer. https://www.theguardian.com/money/2024/apr/24/matchesfashion-strikes-a-sour-note-as-my-902-goes-missing -

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2024/apr/06/vet-who-really-profits-from-poorly-pets I'm lucky enough to have an independent vet just a couple of miles away. Even so, my previous cat's bills came to more than £20k in a year – £7000 for a three-day stay at the RCVS hospital at Potters Bar to kick off with. -

Some years ago I took part in a photography exhibition in St Petersburg (Russia, not US) and I've remained in friendly contact with the organiser. We're exchanging emails about the awful attack in Moscow and it's obvious we are miles apart - she insists it was Ukraine, backed by the USA, which never issued the warning about a planned Islamic State attack that I mentioned to her. She's a long-term government employee, now running a big state museum, so I'm careful about what I say in emails to her as they're probably not private. But it's scary just how much she apparently believes this has US involvement, when the Islamic State hates Russia and the US have given the latter warnings about attacks. Or am I being very naive? -

'Jeremy Hunt has doubled down on his claim that earning £100,000 a year “doesn’t go as far as you might think” for people in his Surrey constituency, after he was criticised for being out of touch. 'The chancellor had previously tweeted that the sum was “not a huge salary” for people in South West Surrey. The median salary for a full-time worker last year was £34,963 and in Surrey it is £42,000. 'Hunt defended his remarks by saying that people in his constituency were living in an area of very high average house prices. 'He told Sky News’s Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips: “What sounds like a large salary – when you have house prices averaging around £670,000 in my area and you’ve got a mortgage and childcare costs – it doesn’t go as far as you might think. ' “We weren’t able to afford to fund childcare for people on the higher salaries but I was simply saying that’s something I’d love to be able to look at in the next parliament.” ' https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2024/mar/24/jeremy-hunt-doubles-down-on-100k-a-year-doesnt-go-far-claim They could, of course, live in a less nice area with lower house prices than they'd like to, as I and millions of other people do. -

Just thought I'd mention this excellent source of second-hand books https://www.abebooks.co.uk - I'm particularly pleased with it this morning as it turns out that one of the books I ordered is coming from an educational charity - so much better than Amazon (though the reason I'm buying second-hand is because two seem to be only available new from Australia, with a seven-month wait - I do prefer a pristine copy, I admit, though it's not a very ecological approach). -

Has said that if re-elected he will encourage Russia to attack NATO members who don’t pay enough. Maybe everyone here already knew that, but I didn’t until just now - I knew he’d made remarks about not coming to their aid, but of course he’s mad enough to say different things every day. Let’s hope the UK does, in his opinion, eh? https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/mar/12/mussolini-trump-hitler-john-kelly-jim-sciutto-book -

. . . has admitted that she stands to benefit from tens of millions of pounds of profit from personal protective equipment (PPE) sold to the UK government during the pandemic by a company led by her husband, Doug Barrowman. In an interview with the BBC, the couple apologised for denying their role in the deal for more than three years. But a defiant Baroness Mone said: "I don't honestly see there is a case to answer. I can't see what we have done wrong." 'So why did you deny it for more than three years?' is an obvious question. -

Just posting this as some of us (including me) may feel as if we've been trudging about in winter weather a bit too much. The owners of these shoes really would have done a lot of trudging, probably all their lives. https://www.instagram.com/p/C0f0BpLuC84/ It's such a beautiful and apparently simple painting. -

I dare say most people have got their own favourite ways of sending big files - photographs, videos etc - but if anyone hasn't and wants one, https://wetransfer.com is brilliant. The publishing trade runs on it and no doubt companies pay for the extra facilities you can get, but I've used it free several times a week over many years for sending book spreads back and forth and it has never, ever let me down. You get an email to let you know when the recipient has downloaded what you've sent. If you've got several files, it's quickest to zip them together (highlight and compress on a Mac, no doubt something similar on a PC) so you can upload them with just one click. -

Matt Hancock thought that he should decide who would die https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-67297446 I knew about mask contracts going to e.g. his chum the pub landlord etc but the idea of that corrupt, inadequate tosser believing he should have the right to decide who survived or didn't is jaw-dropping. -

I've just had an email from Cats Protection about temporary fostering for cats whose families are fleeing domestic abuse. That's something I'd be very happy to do if I didn't have my own little puss from Cats Protection who would take a dim view of another feline on his territory. I'm posting it here in case anyone else would like to have the benefit of some temporary purring while helping out families having a very difficult time https://www.cats.org.uk/support-us/our-latest-campaigns/together -

https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2023/oct/07/the-reckoning-first-look-jimmy-savile-steve-coogan-bbc I think I’m probably not the only person here who always thought he was creepy and revolting, though I had no idea of the full truth of his activities. I imagine a lot of people who were personally involved with his rise in the BBC and elsewhere but somehow managed to perceive nothing untoward are feeling very uncomfortable about this factual drama getting a mass audience.
