Water investors have withdrawn billions, says research
Shareholders of major UK water companies have withdrawn £85.2bn since privatisation, despite calls for increased investment.
Critics blame under-investment for sewage spills and water leaks.
Water companies plan to raise household bills by 33% over the next five years to fund improvements.
The University of Greenwich claims water companies have invested less than nothing and are exploiting customers.
The research examined the accounts of top water and sewage companies, showing a £5.5bn decline in shareholder investment after adjusting for inflation since 1989.

Regiment cleared 40 years after Falklands ship bombing
The Sir Galahad was bombed during the Falklands War while transporting troops to support the British assault on Stanley.
Recently, declassified documents revealed confusion and missed opportunities to move the ship to safety.
The plan was to disembark troops at Bluff Cove to reinforce British positions, but the ships anchored five miles away at Port Pleasant.
On 8 June 1982, the Sir Galahad, loaded with ammunition, fuel, and soldiers, was struck by Argentine bombs.

Possible return of the Aurora!
The immense sunspot cluster that caused the magnificent aurora borealis last weekend will likely return in two weeks, potentially generating more Northern Lights.
The Sun's heightened radiation continues, disrupting global high-frequency radio communications, and this hyperactive sunspot is a precursor to the Sun's approach to "solar maximum," a period of peak activity in its 11-year cycle.

That little prick in Farnborough!
No, today I’ll be having mine much closer to home. I’m off to get my COVID booster later this morning.
Sky News reported in 2022 that in the first year of the vaccine being used in England, there were around 20 million lives saved. Having booster jabs further protects the population from the world heading back into a pandemic state.
Of course, there are doubters, as there will be for anything, who reject the idea that something that saves so many lives should not be used because a minute number of recipients have had side effects. Every set of chemicals can potentially affect the human body, and it is terrible when it happens, but throughout our lives, we’ve been immunized against a host of illnesses, and by far the majority of us have had longer and better lives because of it.
Of course, you can’t convince everybody that it is wiser to be protected than to take a chance, which means that because I’m not going to travel to Kent for my jab, there is a little prick in Farnborough going spare! -

Australia's richest woman not keen on her portrait.
She has demanded it be removed from the National Gallery. This story was on last night's Headliners. The portrait was done by an indigenous Australian and he has a whole series of portraits hanging in the gallery. All of them are just as bad.

Heard it for the first time last night during the Eurovision song contest semi-final. We weren't competing, it was just to showcase the song.
It's called Dizzy by Olly Alexander. He is the gay lead singer of a group called Years and Years, but for the Eurovision he is a solo artist.
The song is ok so I can't say it's rubbish, but it is so bland. There is no upbeat section or key change to make the song memorable and have people humming the tune.
We are not going to win this year, probably not even top half.
Croatia's song was really good. -

Do you regard the first criminal trial of an ex US President as really important?
NB the trial is expected to take 6 weeks - this might be a long running post. -
Over half of US adults have a literacy rate below the sixth-grade level, according to the National Literacy Institute. If you think education is expensive, the cost of not educating kids is higher. Three-quarters of people on welfare can’t read, while kids who drop out of school end up costing society over $40 billion a year in social services and lost tax dollars. Numeracy rates are even lower.
One reason no one talks about things like literacy is that it’s just too embarrassing to admit that, in the richest countries in the world, literary rates are so low. Talking about a president's sex life is now normal, but when it comes to reading and writing … it seems that’s better left unsaid.

Hi
In a couple of weeks (Sunday 12th May) I'll be taking part in the Marsden March - A fifteen mile sponsored walk from near the Marsden Hospital in Chelsea to the other Marsden Hospital in Sutton, passing through Putney, Wimbledon Common, Raynes Park, Stonecot Hill, North Cheam, Cheam and Belmont. The aim is to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity - The Marsden's target this year is to raise one and a half million pounds with around 5000 walkers.
Some of you have already donated to my Marsden fund (thank you for that). If anybody else would like to contribute my fundraising page can be found at:
https://march.royalmarsden.org/fundraisers/tonylang/marsden-march
I've lost a lot of friends and family to various forms of cancer and the Marsden cured the cancer of a good friend, so I'd like to raise as much money as I can.
The website of the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity gives more detail about the March at:
https://www.royalmarsden.org/support-us/banham-marsden-march
Every donation helps to make a difference, so please support me however you can.
I'll be starting at around 9am and I'm aiming for a time of four and a half hours or better, which I think is a reasonable time as I'm 63.
I have a tracking app on my phone and I'll post the results and some photos later.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers.

On a recent trip, I fell head over heels in love with Scotland. From Edinburgh to Loch Ness, its beauty left me speechless.
Over the last year, visiting various places in the UK, I've been struck at how beautiful so many places around us are. Countryside, villages, meeting friendly welcoming locals has been such fun
We should all be very proud xThis discussion is now closed.
