Telephone Fraud - Advice from Action Fraud
Criminals are targeting members of the public with automated calls stating that the recipient has been charged for an Amazon Prime subscription.
•Victims are receiving automated calls stating they’ve been charged for an Amazon Prime subscription
•They are connected to a scammer posing as an Amazon worker when they try to cancel the subscription
Since the start of September, Action Fraud has received 200 reports from people who have lost money to the scam
Action Fraud, the national fraud and cyber-crime reporting centre, is warning people of a new scam that has seen victims lose over £400,000.
Unsuspecting members of the public are being mercilessly targeted with automated calls which tell them a fraudster has used their personal details to sign up for an Amazon Prime subscription. The victim is then instructed to press 1 to cancel the transaction. When they do this, they are directly connected to the real scammer who poses as an Amazon customer service representative.
The criminal tells the victim the Amazon Prime subscription was purchased fraudulently and that they need remote access to the victim’s computer in order to fix a security flaw that will prevent it from happening again. The victim is instructed to download an application called Team Viewer and asked to log onto their online banking account. The software download grants the fraudster remote access to the victim’s computer and allows them to see the victim’s personal and financial details.
Other variants of the crime involve victims being told they are due a refund for an unauthorised transaction on their Amazon account.
So far, Action Fraud has received 200 reports from people who have lost money to the scam. They have received a further 300 reports from people who received one of the scam calls but did not follow the fraudsters instructions.
What can you do to protect yourself?
Action Fraud is reminding people to never install any software as a result of a cold call.
Pauline Smith, Head of Action Fraud, said:
“Unsolicited requests to remote access your computer should always raise a red flag. It’s easy to feel embarrassed when faced with unexpected or complex conversations but it’s okay to stop the discussion if you do not feel in control of it.
“If you’ve received an unexpected phone call, or other communication, stop and take a minute to think about whether an organisation would get in touch with you out of the blue in this way. Instead, contact them directly using a known email or phone number.”
Remember, if you have been a victim of fraud or cyber-crime, report it to Action Fraud online or by calling 0300 123 2040.

That moment you realise the bargain you thought you had, isn't
I have been caught out again by Wowcher showing me an item for sale at one price and also showing me the much higher price they claim it was being sold for. Making it look like a bargain.
it is elder sisters birthday this week. She wanted a pair of shoes or money to buy a pair. I looked on Wowcher and found a pair of ankle boots from Redfoot Shoes. They look good and were £32.99 down from alleged original price of £92.99. Thought that's a bargain and waited for sis to come round and choose a colour.
A little while after ordering I googled Redfoot Shoes. they have a website. They sell direct. The shoes I paid £32.99 for are on there for £27.99 full price. So not such a bargain after all. -

This country, (successive governments), has issued licences to various arms dealers in this country to sell weapons containing white phosphorus to the Turkish Government in Ankara over the last 15 years or so. White phosphorus, used in incendiary devices designed to inflict horrendous burns on it’s victims. I make no apologies for posting the following photograph of a Syrian Kurd, badly burned by said device, having been let loose by a Turkish fighter jet.

I've not watched this yet so can't really comment, but it is getting mixed reviews from what I read in the Mail. Some say it was a really good social experiment, others say it exploits the Himba and is white saviour bullshit.
My initial thoughts are; It would've been better with an ordinary British family rather than the fame obsessed Moffats. The Himba are not as primitive and naive as they look. They just prefer to live their traditional way of life. But their mud hut villages are not that far from modern towns. There is evidence on the web of them shopping and they probably have a 4x4 hidden behind a tree. They are probably taking the proverbial out of the Moffats. Here is a non daily mail weblink. https://www.newstatesman.com/culture/tv-radio/2019/10/channel-4s-british-tribe-next-door-lazy-exploitative-and-offensive-tv -

Essex Police: 39 bodies found in lorry container
The bodies of 39 people have been found in a lorry container in Essex.
Police were called by the ambulance service shortly before 01:40 BST after the discovery at Waterglade Industrial Park in Eastern Avenue, Grays.
The lorry driver, a 25-year-old man from Northern Ireland, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
Essex Police said the lorry travelled from Bulgaria and entered the country via Holyhead, Anglesey, on Saturday.
Early indications are that 38 adults and one teenager have died, the force said.
Ch Supt Andrew Mariner said officers were trying to identify victims but anticipated a "lengthy process".
"We have arrested the lorry driver in connection with the incident, who remains in police custody as our inquiries continue," he said.
A cordon has been put in place and the Waterglade Industrial Park is closed off.
In June 2000, the bodies of 58 Chinese immigrants were found in the back of a lorry in Dover. A Dutch lorry driver was jailed the following year for their manslaughter.

Keep Your House Secure As the Evenings Draw In
The evenings are already starting to draw in and the clocks go back
on Sunday 27th October , meaning many of us will
return home from work or school in the dark.
Darker evenings can give burglars an opportunity to easily see
which houses are unoccupied. Here are a few things you might like
to consider to lessen the chance of your house being targeted:
• Invest in a timer light switch and vary the time it comes on each day
to make it look more natural. It can also be used with a radio or TV to
give the impression that someone’s home.
• Perhaps purchase a fake/simulated TV device which lights up a
room like a real TV.
• Keep valuables out of sight and mark them with your house
number and postcode using a UV pen, or consider buying a forensic
property marking system.
• Register your valuables via www.immobilise.com and keep an
inventory list. It’s free and takes just a few minutes.
• If you have jewellery at home, photograph it for insurance
purposes and consider storing it in a suitable safe.
• Lock your doors and windows, if you have a UPVC door make sure
you have double locked it by lifting the handle and locking it with
the key. Make sure the key is removed from the lock and out of
reach.
• If you’re going away over the half-term holiday, remember not to
post details of your holiday on social networking websites, cancel
any milk or newspaper deliveries and if you have a burglar alarm,
make sure it is set before you leave.
• Look out for your neighbours’ houses, especially when they’re not
at home and call the police if you see anything suspicious on 101 or
999 in an emergency

Washing at 30 degrees - does it really save money
When I had the smart meters installed I got given the energy saving tips leaflet. One piece of advice is to wash clothes at 30 degrees. So I tried it today.
Normally I use the mixed load setting which is 40 degrees and starts with 1 hour 5 minutes on the clock but really takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.
Today on the 30 degree setting the clock started at 1 hour 40 minutes but actually took 2 hours to complete.
So which one really saved me money, or do they cancel out? -
International Stuttering Awareness Day
(ISAD) is observed annually on October 22. It is organized by the International Stuttering Association, International Fluency Association, and European League of Stuttering Association.
Stuttering, also known as stammering, is a speech disorder most commonly associated with involuntary repetitions of sounds or syllables which disrupt the flow of speech. It also typically involves the prolongations of sounds and involuntary pausing or hesitation before speech.
Stuttering can have a severe impact on a person's emotional state and functioning. It frequently leads to stress, social anxiety, and self-imposed isolation. Children who stutter often become targets of bullying. According to statistics, about 1% of the world's population suffer from stuttering.
International Stuttering Awareness Day was created in 1998 to raise public awareness of stuttering and educate people about this common speech disorder, its consequences and methods of treatment. Numerous events are organized across the world by international and national stuttering associations. They include (but are not limited to) online conferences, public awareness campaigns, and educational activities. This discussion is now closed.

Caps Lock Day
(stylized as CAPS LOCK DAY) is an unofficial holiday celebrated twice a year, on June 28 and October 22. On this day, you can type everything in all caps without being afraid to appear rude.
Caps Lock is a keyboard button that sets an input mode in which all typed letter are uppercase (capital) by default. As a rule, typing messages in all caps is considered the online equivalent of shouting. Netiquette typically discourages the use of caps lock when typing messages online, as it is considered rude.
International Caps Lock Day was created in 2000 by Derek Arnold, a user on the community weblog MetaFilter. It was designed as a parody holiday to make fun of those who overuse the Caps Lock button and drive other users crazy.
A second Caps Lock Day was instituted in 2009. It is celebrated on June 28 to commemorate the death anniversary of Billy Mays, an American infomercial icon and remarkably loud pitch-man. Mays always sounded like he was talking in all caps.
On Caps Lock Day, you can let go and post messages IN ALL CAPS. You can even add an exclamation point at the end of each sentence for good measure, just to make sure you are heard... or read, whatever. And don't forget to spread the word about the holiday via social media. -

Parking Meter and Machine Scams
We have been alerted to a scam in another part of the country involving parking meters.
The scam happens when you are approached by someone who pleads with you to help them with a parking meter that won’t accept their foreign card.
They ask you to use your card to make their car park payment, and they will give you the cash.
Once you have entered your card and PIN number, your card will not come out of the machine. They have used a device to capture it. They ring who they say is the meter company who tells you they will send an engineer to fix the machine and will contact you later to return your card.
Once you have left, they retrieve your card and use it.
Protect Your Money
If you enter your card into any form of payment machine and are unable to retrieve it for any reason, you should immediately contact your bank to stop the card.
Whenever you enter your PIN number, ensure that nobody can see the number – use your other hand to block the view of any onlookers.
If you are approached by someone in the manner described above, please decline their request and report the suspicious behaviour to police.

Apple Day is an annual festival in the United Kingdom organized by the UK charity and lobby group Common Ground. It was first held on October 21, 1990 and has been celebrated every year since then.
Common Ground focuses on promoting local distinctiveness. This phrase was coined by Common Ground in 1982 and basically refers to the concept of spirit of place. Apple Day was established as a holiday to celebrate local produce with the apple symbolizing local foods.
On this day, people are reminded of numerous local apple varieties that are often ignored in favour of several supermarket-friendly ones. Common Grounds links particular apple varieties with their place of origin in the hope that orchards will be recognized for their significant contribution to local distinctiveness as well as genetic, physical and cultural diversity.
Apple Day is celebrated in many places throughout the United Kingdom. Although it was first celebrated on October 21, many venues prefer to organize events on the weekend closest to October 30. Typical Apple Day events include, but are not limited to, apple inspired games such as apple bobbing, apple identification, cookery demonstrations, juice and cider tastings, fairs. -
Trafalgar Day is celebrated in the United Kingdom on October 21 each year. It commemorates the victory won by the Royal Navy over French and Spanish forces at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
The Battle of Trafalgar was the most decisive naval victory of the War of the Third Coalition. The Royal Navy led by Horatio Nelson and Cuthbert Collingwood defeated the combined fleets of the Spanish and French navies led by Federico Garvino and Pierre-Charles Villeneuve. Nelson made a significant contribution to the victory but was shot and killed during the battle.
Trafalgar Day was first celebrated in Trafalgar Square in London on October 21, 1896 and has been celebrated with great pomp throughout the British Empire for more than two decades after that. Celebrations usually included parades, formal dinners and other events.
Public celebration of Trafalgar Day declined during the First World War. However, it was still marked. In fact, Trafalgar Day is still observed in the United Kingdom although it is not a bank holiday.
Trafalgar Day is typically celebrated with military parades and solemn ceremonies which include wreath laying. Parades and ceremonies involve members of Sea Cadets, HMS Forward, and various civic organizations. The largest ceremonies take place in London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, and Gibraltar. -
Resealable food wrappers that aren't
I've noticed that quite a few food items have wrappers that say they are resealable, but most of them aren't.
Last week I needed a new loaf of bread. I usually get Warburtons but one called Allinsons Scandalously Seeded loaf was on offer. On the end of the wrapper it said "resealable". So I bought it. Later on opened it, ate a few slices, went to close and reseal it to find it is just a normal plastic bread wrapper.
The same goes for McVities Ginger Pudding Cake. Says resealable on the wrapper but its just a normal wrapper. Getting the cake back in the wrapper after taking a slice is almost impossible unless you rip it a bit.
Even Cadburys Dairy Milk is getting in on the act, claiming their wrapper is resealable.
Some foods get it right like Pilgrims Choice cheese that has the plasic clip-it air tight reseal. -

is observed in over 150 counties around the world every year on October 16. This observance was created in November 1979 and the first events were organized in 1980.
The Hungarian Delegation headed by the former Hungarian Minister of Agriculture and Food initiated the idea of establishment of World Food Day, as an observance highlighting the importance of investments in agriculture. He expressed this idea at the 20th General Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization and it was supported by the member countries. October 16 was designated to be World Food Day, since it's the anniversary of foundation of the organization in 1945.
Celebration of World Food Day annually adopts a different theme in order to draw public attention to the areas that need for action and the issues behind hunger and poverty. Most of the annual themes revolve around agriculture and investments in private sector. Many developing countries depend on agriculture and investments in private sector are frequently forgotten about. -
