Available now on Netflix
A Ken Loach film (possibly his last)
Based in 2016 in a former mining town in Northern England rifts start to form with the arrival of refugees from war torn Syria. The families filling up houses that have lain empty for some time.
The Kindly landlord of the run down pub takes the brunt of locals anger, biased and racist attitudes for his friendship with Yara who arrives with her family and her camera.
As always Loach’s down to earth approach, honesty and sometimes grim detail is realistic, at times heartwarming, at other times heartbreaking.
Our opinion (family) Beautiful, endearing, sad, touching - don’t miss it

This film was on BBC 2 yesterday and is now on the Iplayer.
Billed as a crime drama I felt it was so much more. Whilst the family say it is not accurate and there are many changes and inaccuracies to what happened in real life. It is based on a true story.
Lady Gaga in the starring role alongside Adam Driver was superb throughout and I enjoy a film where I learn something from it.
I would recommend watching it but reading the true story as well. In the film they forget the couple had two children. 👧🏻 -
I know this an old film but a beautiful one (1941) if you love old films, which I do. You will need a big box of tissues!
Edna Gladney lost her son when he was very young. By chance she discovered the injustice within the law towards children whose parents are unknown, and decided to open an orphanage for these children, despite the stigma. She fought against the unfair laws that discriminated against children born out of wedlock. -
I loved this film called 'The Last Bus' with Timothy Spall, such a very fine Actor.
Shows how love conquers all and true love never dies.
I watched it on BBC I player. -
The Electrical life of Louis Wain (2021) now on Netflix (Edited)
Starring Benedict Cumberbatch ( with a prosthetic nose) and Claire Foy and featuring a host of stars from Toby Jones, Taika Waititi, Sharon Rooney, Nick Cave and Richard Ayoade to Adele Akhtar, Asim Chaudhry and Siobhan McSweeney
Based on and apparently very close to the extraordinary true life story of the British ‘cat artist’ Louis Wain.
You’ll either love it or loathe it according to critics . Depends on, maybe your heart ❤️
Rotten tomatoes reviews are interesting
I found it a charming study of an incredible life, beautifully shot, romantic, tragic and well worth getting engrossed in. -
Dream horse (Edited)

Down to earth British film

Till
It is based on the true story of Mamie Till-Bradley, an educator and activist who pursued justice after the murder of her 14-year-old son Emmett in August 1955. -
Glenda Jackson’s final film before she passed away and Michael Cairn’s final as he retires
https://m.imdb.com/title/tt14124080/
It looks like a real tearjerker and I look forward to seeing it -
Starring Vanessa Redgrave
Christopher Waltz and Annette Bening
Based on a true story. I found it more interesting than the average crime drama.
The eccentric younger husband of a wealthy well connected lady is investigated after his wife is found dead.
The film charts how they meet, their marriage and particularly the ‘background’ the younger husband appears to have !
Enjoyed it and would recommend -
Mad Men (Edited)
Maybe one of the best TV Shows I have ever watched. Originally aired between 2007 and 2015. The story follows a group of people involved in an advertisement agency in New York over a decade between 1960 and 1970. Can totally recommend.

2021 a Comedy drama on Netflix
A young woman (Aubrey Plaza) having inherited her Father’s publishing house finds its in trouble and seeks the help of a bad tempered but legendary old author (Michael Caine)

23 Walks - 2020 available on Netflix (Edited)
‘Dog lovers follow the path to romance’
Starring David Johns and Alison Steadman
A couple meet whilst walking their dogs and take 23 walks together over year.
A slow but steadily building story of secrets, sadness, trauma and love.
Beautiful, touching and heart rending. The dogs were great actors
David Johns was magnificent -
In this intimate exploration of identity, trauma and power, a young woman seeks out her birth mother, inadvertently triggering a string of events which change both their lives. Starring Ann Skelly, Orla Brady and Aidan Gillen.
This is a beautiful film that resonated with me as I was an adopted child who longed to know where I came from.
I watched it on Prime Netflix tonight -
Not sure if I should recommend this Netflix film really, I watched it behind a cushion! Definitely don't watch it if you don't like heights!
-
It's getting colder outside, either record this film to watch next week or snuggle up with a hot drink on your sofa and watch this wonderful 1965 film, one of James Stewart's best. An American Civil War Western......11.am on Film4 Channel.
I shall be recording it. -
We have a Ghost - Netflix 2023
‘ The discovery that their house is haunted by a ghost named Ernest makes Kevin's family a social media sensation. But when Kevin and Ernest get to the bottom of the mystery of Ernest's past, they become targets of the CIA’
Just over 2 hours long. I expected this film to be a bit like Casper or even Ghostbusters (the investigators guns were) but it was a total surprise and we loved it. As the youngest son befriends the ghost and the story gradually unfolds we were routing for ‘Ernest’ but is he what it appears?
A sad tale transpires and by the end surprisingly both my husband and I were reaching for the tissues. I can understand why this film , based on the book and directed by Michael Landon’s son Christopher, is no 1 in Netflix’s film this week.
It’s sweet, clever and touching and in places funny too -
I started to re-watch some random Columbo Episodes from the 70s. Still funny as hell, though the quality various between episodes. Anyone else here remembering it?
(To be fair I didn't watch it in the 70s originally but much later) -
More football tonight so I watched this beautiful true story film
A married woman realizes how unhappy her marriage really is, and that her life needs to go in a different direction. After a painful divorce, she takes off on a round-the-world journey to "find herself". -
Very good film that I have just finished watching starring Sandra Bullock
Ruth Slater, a woman released from prison after serving a sentence for a violent crime and attempts to re-enter society. She must try to put her life back together again in a world that refuses to forgive her past. -
Film Stars don't die in Liverpool
based on the true story of Peter Turner, a struggling Liverpool actor who, in 1978, met and began a passionate relationship with the eccentric American actress Gloria Grahame.
In her younger days she was the 'floozy' in 'It's a Wonderful Life' -
Netflix 2019 Rom/com
Silly film but it has its moments
A woman gets upgraded on a plane and after consuming free champagne the plane hits turbulence. She is drunk and panics, thinking the plane is going to crash.
She then proceeds to tell the good looking stranger next to her all her secrets , thinking they will be dead soon.
At this point we don’t know everything she told him
Later at work she finds out that the stranger is the company’s new CEO and is embarrassed realising she had told him some humiliating secrets. He agrees not to tell anyone if she keeps one secret for him.
A light comedy , easy going uncomplicated plot . -

Available to watch on Netflix. Two hours long but don’t get put off
“Ben Thomas, an IRS agent, is guilt-ridden for his mistake that killed seven people including his fiancee. He embarks on an extraordinary journey in order to change the lives of seven strangers”
A serious plot, a tear jerker, especially towards the end when it really all makes sense.
I may be late in watching this now 15 year old movie but I won’t forget it. The best I have ever seen Will Smith. So moving, so sad it made my heart cry 😢 -
'Ben is back' starring Julia Roberts...
A mother's happiness at her troubled son's surprise visit home for Christmas soon turns to panic as the family faces the fallout from his addiction.
What are your thoughts? -
Started watching "Severance" recently. I believe it's exclusive to Apple TV+, but if you have the chance to watch it, it's a great science fiction "horror style" series about IT workers who have agreed to have their memories wiped every time they enter or leave their work place.

King of thieves BBC1 10.40 tonight
One of the films based on the 2015 Hatton Garden heist. I went to see this at the cinema with a friend who is Paul Whitehouse crazy.
Glad I went though as it also has Jim Broadbent , Michael Caine, Charlie Cox and Tom Courtney in it.
We really enjoyed it. Hope you do too -
Watched this film tonight, very good but had me on the edge of the sofa and had to get hubby to come and watch the end with me 'cos it was a bit tense and scary 😞
Starring Kevin Cosnor
A retired sheriff and his wife, grieving over the death of their son, set out to find their only grandson. -
Christmas Tip: Trading Places (1983)
Starring Dan Aykroyd, Eddie Murphy, Ralph Bellamy, Don Ameche, Denholm Elliott, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

The Best of me - 2014 on Netflix
Billed as a romantic drama, I found it the most beautifully sad, cruel, moving film I have seen in a long time.
So glad I watched it in the privacy of my own home. As I admit I cried out for parts of it to stop, not be happening. If you can watch this with no emotion 😐 you may have no heart ❤️ -
I am a big fan of Anthony Hopkins
I watched Fracture tonight, my husband says it's an old film but I hadn't seen it before. He is a really fine Actor.
-
Monica O My Darling 2022 Netflix
Loved this crime, comedy, drama although it got a little confusing with so many plots, murders and attempted murders 😂
An Indian film with good dubbing
A slick robotics expert joins a murderous plot after a passionate affair takes a sudden turn, but nothing — not even death — is what it seems to be. -
Recently released
A nurse is hired to watch a girl who is living without food . Trying to find out whether this really the case.
Dark, disturbing, immensely sad and at times difficult to watch. I found it intriguing
Highly recommended ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ -
Seen on Great Movies last night
Starring Julianne Moore and Dominic West
A bereaved mother is told her son, killed in a plane crash never existed but even as all proof of his existence disappears she fights to find out what really happened .
Really enjoyed this psychological thriller with its twists, turns and drama.
Highly recommended -
Ghostbusters (The Original, 1984)
Absolute must-rewatch: The original Ghostbusters movie from 1984, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver , Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis. For me still one of the most iconic comedies of all time.
Anyone else remembers this movie from the time when it came out (I was a kid)? And of course, one of the best soundtracks ever. -
What to watch on Halloween? (Edited)
Currently I consider re-watching some old Simpsons Treehouse of Horror Episodes. Better ideas in the comments, please.
-
Not your average Christmas movie: The City of Lost Children (1995)
A rather bizarre movie about an evil guy stealing children's dreams by Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (who also did Delicatessen and Amélie), with Ron Perlman. I remember it when it came out and really liked it, though it wasn't a mainstream success.
-
Just been to see this film. Set in 1923 on a bleak but beautiful island off Ireland. Intense, dark but with comedic undertones. Quite touching and a bit different. Colin Farrell in main role.

Vue cinema in Romford is closed

The School for Good and Evil (Edited)
In some cinemas and on Netflix since 19th October - this two and a half hour film, based on a series of books, is already top of films being watched and loved.
If you enjoy fantasy and magic, beautiful cinematography and films like Harry Potter you’ll enjoy this . Those films are not usually my favourites- but I really enjoyed this. Two friends get taken to the school and are on opposite sides.
Give it a try

'Allo 'Allo! Opinions please. (Edited)
When I watched it the first time I wasn't quite sure about it, the second time I found it funnier but still.., what do people think about it nowadays?

Lal Singh Chaddha (remake of Forrest Gump) (Edited)
Netflix 2022
This beautiful Indian remake of the 1994 film
Forrest Gump is in Hindi but has good subtitles and is well worth a watch.
Apparently many years in the making, rewriting, held back due to the pandemic it was released in August in cinemas and seen as a flop!
Maybe it was financially but that’s certainly not my opinion of this touching, lovingly told, stunning film. Using over a hundred Indian backdrops and locations.
I loved Aamir Khan as Lal and Kareena Kapoo as Rupar and the actors who played them as children. It was educational, sad, funny and in places almost magical. This is one I will be watching again and again ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ -
Drama/mystery 2022
Starring James Norton and Gemma Arterton
‘A con artist masquerades as an MI5 agent for years. But then he scams a quick-witted lawyer — who decides to take him down. Based on a true story’
Absolutely loved this film. On the edge of my seat … incredible that this man really
exists … if you watch it, don’t switch off until you’ve read the very last statement !
What a horrible , cruel conman , who never stops! -
So, there’s sixty six days to Christmas and there’s a lovely freeview channel showing seasonal films
Let’s see if we can name at least one Christmas film a day until the 25th December
Maybe our all time favourites as we get closer -
Recently revisited this science fiction/action/comedy(?) movie by Luc Besson from 1997, with Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman and Ian Holm. It's a strange movie, has 90s written all over it (it doesn't take itself seriously at all) but on a big budget. Still enjoyable.

Life isn’t always Ha ha Hee Hee
