Having her benefits cut led to the death of a mother of nine, an inquest has found.
Housebound Jodey Whiting, from Stockton-on-Tees, who had numerous physical and mental health issues, was found dead in 2017, two weeks after being denied Employment Support Allowance (ESA) because she had been deemed fit to work.
Senior Coroner for Teesside Clare Bailey recorded a verdict of suicide due to a "deteriorating mental state" precipitated by the Department for Work and Pensions' (DWP) decision.
The DWP said it was "deeply regretful" after the inquest heard that Ms Whiting, 42, "had lost hope" at the time of her death.
Teesside Coroner's Court was told how in late 2016, Ms Whiting - who suffered from a curvature of the spine - missed a benefits assessment after being admitted to hospital with pneumonia.
The inquest also heard that doctors subsequently discovered a cyst on her brain.
However, after being finally discharged, a letter from the DWP was found among the unopened mail at her flat asking why she had not attended a recent medical assessment.
That was in January 2017, with another letter telling her she was "fit to work" arriving a month later.

A record number of Americans applied for British citizenship between January and March, according to the first set of data covering the start of Donald Trump’s second presidential term.
Some 1,931 Americans put in an application, the most since records began in 2004 and a jump of 12% on the previous quarter, figures from the UK Home Office showed Thursday. Applications had already soared during the October-December period, which coincided with Trump’s re-election.
Successful applications by US citizens to settle permanently in the United Kingdom, rather than just move there initially, also hit a record high last year, the latest period for which official data is available. Settlement comes with the right to live, work and study in Britain indefinitely and can be used to apply for citizenship. More than 5,500 Americans were granted settled status in 2024, a fifth more than in 2023.
The last time American applications for British citizenship spiked was in 2020, during Trump’s first presidential term and at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Comanche - The Only Survivor of Custer's Last Stand (Edited)

25 - 26 June 1876 - Custer's Last Stand
Cavalry horse COMANCHE, was the only 7th Cavalry survivor of Custer's Little Big Horn massacre. He was bought in 1868 by the US Army in St.Louis Missouri.
Captain Myles Keogh of the 7th Cavalry who was killed in the battle, bought him for his personal mount.
Many links on the web give details of Custer's Last Stand.
The Little Big Horn battle took place on Sunday 25th June 1876.
When found, Comanche had a number of wounds, 3 serious - one through the neck, one through his front shoulders and one went right through his rear just in front of the hind legs, caused by an arrow and two bullets, the rest were flesh wounds. He was found two days after the battle wandering about very weak from his wounds, amongst Custer's 215 dead and mutilated soldiers and a number of dead horses. All the fit horses were taken by the Indians.
Comanche was wounded many times before the Little Big Horn, arrows, bullets and flesh wounds but survived all these to retain his fitness as a cavalry horse.
He was nursed back to health - it took over a year in a special stable with loving medical care and he had to have slings to help him recover. After that was treated to a luxurious life as the proud and cherished mascot of the 7th Cavalry. He lived for 15 years after the battle and died of natural causes.
Comanche is one of only two horses in American history to be given full military honours on their death.
The image shown was taken on the actual battle field, dead horses are shown in the back ground.
This poor horse must have suffered a life of pain with all the wounds he received, but still carried out his duties as if nothing had happened. He was declared unfit for service after this final Little Big Horn battle.
He is now preserved in a glass case at the University of Kansas Natural History Museum on public display.
Many people have claimed to have survived the battle of The Little Big Horn, but none have been officially corroborated. -

Dambusters Raid - 16th May 1943 ; Death of a Faithful Friend (Edited)
Nigger was a male Black Labrador retriever belonging to Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC of the Royal Air Force, and the mascot of No. 617 Squadron - the Dambusters.
Nigger died on 16 May 1943, the day of the famous "Dambusters" raid, when he was hit by a motorist. He was buried at midnight as Gibson was leading the raid. "Nigger" was the codeword Gibson used to confirm the breach of the Möhne Dam.
Nigger's grave is at Royal Air Force station Scampton, Lincolnshire.
In later years, the authorities removed Niggers name from his gravestone and replaced it with a Black Labrador image.
In the image shown, Nigger's original gravestone is the L/H one, the R/H one is the desecrated stone. -
