Totally agree with the winner, the president of Ethiopia who within months of being elected ended a 20+ year conflict with neighbouring Eritrea.
But WTF was Greta Thunberg even nominated? Fighting climate change isn't bringing peace to anywhere.

is an annual awareness day observed on October 12 in many countries throughout the world. Its main goal is to disseminate information about joint disorders that are collectively known as arthritis, as well as to raise public awareness of challenges that people with arthritis have to face every day.
“Arthritis” is an umbrella term often used to describe any disorder that affects joints. Generally by arthritis people mean one of the diseases where joint pain is primary, such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and others. However, arthritis can also be a secondary condition to a wide range of diseases, from psoriasis and celiac disease to Lyme disease and lupus. Overall there are over 100 types of arthritis.
Typical symptoms of arthritis include joint pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion, skin redness, warmth, and swelling of the affected joints. The disease typically becomes more common with age, but some of its types affect young people and even children and teenagers (for example, juvenile idiopathic arthritis). Arthritis is one of the most common causes of disability.
World Arthritis Day was created to raise public awareness of all forms of arthritis and emphasize the importance of early diagnosis of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. Some forms of arthritis, such as fibromyalgia, may remain undiagnosed for up to 5 years, and a delayed diagnosis makes it harder to treat the condition. is an annual awareness day observed on October 12 in many countries throughout the world. Celebration of World Egg Day attracts public attention to eggs, as a good source of protein, vitamins, folic acid and other nutrients. Eggs have a vital role in feeding people around the world and they are always affordable.

is marked by people around the world on October 10. It is dedicated to a global problem that affects most countries. The main goal of this international observance is to encourage people to change the lives of homeless people in their local community.
Homeless people are people who don’t have a permanent dwelling. Homelessness can be caused by many reasons, including, but not limited to, lack of affordable housing, forced eviction, gentrification, domestic violence, living with a disability or mental disorder, poverty, natural disasters, social exclusion, and more. According to 2005 statistics, an estimated 100 million people worldwide were homeless and 1 billion people lived as refugees, squatters or in temporary shelter, lacking adequate housing.
The concept of World Homeless Day was conceived in online discussions on the global issue of homelessness involving people from various parts of the world. It was marked for the first time on October 10, 2010. World Homeless Day is designed to raise awareness of homelessness as a global issue, to combat associated stigma (contrary to a popular misconception, not all homeless people are addicts or criminals), and to encourage people to get involved in responding to homelessness.
The best way to celebrate World Homeless Day is to support local service providers for homeless people. You can volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen, donate clothes or food items, etc. Even if it seems like you’re not doing much, you’re still making a difference. -
World Porridge Day is observed annually on October 10. It was launched in 2009 as a fundraising campaign for Mary’s Meals, a Scotland-based charity which sets up school feeding programs in poor countries, where hunger prevents children from gaining an education.
Porridge is a staple food in many countries, including much of Africa and Northern Europe. It is made by boiling chopped, crushed, or ground starchy plants—typically grain—in water or milk. Grains used for porridge include oat, rice, barley, wheat, buckwheat, semolina, corn, sorghum, quinoa, and others. Some types of porridge have their own names such as Russian kasha, American grits or Italian polenta.
Why did Mary’s Meals create a holiday dedicated to porridge? The thing is that its largest school feeding programs are in Malawi and Liberia, where the children’s ration is based on maize porridge. World Porridge Day was created to show that a handful of porridge can make a difference and become a real salvation for a chronically hungry child.
On the occasion of World Porridge Day, the Scottish village of Carrbridge hosts the World Porridge Making Championship. The Championship was inaugurated in 1994 and has taken place alongside World Porridge Day since 2009. The winner of the competition is awarded a prize named the Golden Spurtle (a spurtle is a wooden Scottish kitchen tool used to stir porridge). -
A new series has started on E4.
All the contestants are ex-reality show people except for one couple. Yona Higgins and her more famous sister.
I hope the sisters win but its not looking good already as they are getting isolated from the reality stars that have become very cliquey. -
Cleaning washing machine (wrong group?)
Most mornings I have to put lurcher dog's padded harness and coat (she has several) in the washing machine due to the horrendous rolling she does in foxes' poo - dog also has to be washed as best I can. House and car just reeks of it and it's not a pleasant aroma.
To be honest, not happy about putting in washing machine but needs must and I then do a short low wash with just bleach to hopefully clean the machine. Other than getting rid of dog (very tempted), any suggestions - would it be better to buy the anti-bacterial washing additive instead of the bleach second wash. I'm getting paranoid about it.This discussion is now closed.

National Mouldy Cheese Day ------9th Oct. --- Really --- (Edited)
National Mouldy Cheese Day Some people think mouldy cheese is gross, but others enjoy its distinct taste and flavour immensely. The National Mouldy Cheese Day celebrated on October 9 is the perfect excuse for the latter to indulge themselves with gourmet cheese such as Gorgonzola or Roquefort.
Production of a large number of cheese varieties requires mould. It is mould that helps cheese develop a unique flavour. The moulds used in cheese making are completely harmless to eat. Blue cheeses are often considered “the mouldiest” because blue mould is more noticeable than white one. Blue cheeses also carry a more distinct smell than, for example, Camembert or Brie.
Blue cheese is veined or spotted throughout with blue, blue-green or blue-grey mould which is a result of the cheese being pierced with strains of Penicillium fungi. Some cheeses have fungi spores mixed in with the curds and others are injected with spores before the curds form.
Some of the best known blue cheeses are Roquefort, Gorgonzola, Blue Stilton, Bleu d'Auvergne, Cabrales, Dorset Blue Vinney, Fourme d'Ambert, Stichelton. Blue cheeses typically have salty and sharp flavor. They can be eaten by themselves or be melted or crumbled over or into foods. Blue cheese goes especially well with pears.

Octopus Day, sometimes referred to as National Octopus Day, International Octopus Day and even World Octopus Day, is observed annually on October 8. It is dedicated to one of the most unusual creatures that live on our planet.
Octopuses are soft-bodied, eight-limbed molluscs that belong to the class Cephalofoda, alongside squids, cuttlefish, and nautiloids. They are among the oldest creatures on Earth; cephalopods have existed for 500 million years, and the oldest known fossil of octopus ancestors is almost 300 million years old. But octopuses may have actually existed for longer than that; it’s just hard to prove since octopuses are mostly soft tissue and their fossils are therefore relatively rare.
Their ancientness, however, isn’t the only thing that makes octopuses so amazing. These animals have three hearts, and each of their tentacles has thousands of chemoreceptors that allow octopuses taste what they touch. Moreover, octopuses can change their color as a form of camouflage and shoot the ink. All octopuses are venomous, but most species are not deadly to humans. The only exception is the blue-ringed octopuses whose venom can kill a human within minutes.
But that’s not all! Octopuses have a very high brain-to-body weight ration and a highly complex nervous system (for mollusks). They have a good memory (both short- and long-term) and an ability to distinguish between different geometric shapes. They have also been observed to play and use tools. Overall, octopuses are considered highly intelligent, but there has been an ongoing debate concerning the extent of their intelligence.
Such amazing creatures definitely deserve their own holiday! The best way to celebrate Octopus Day is to attend a public aquarium and observe octopuses, but we realize that not everyone has such an opportunity. Watching a documentary about octopuses is the next best thing. What you shouldn’t do on this day is eat sushi (or anything, actually) with octopus because it would be highly disrespectful. -
Dinner/lunch/tea - what do you call it ?

Frappé coffee (also known as café frappeé or Greek frappé) originates in Greece though the word frappé is French. When describing a drink, this word means “chilled”. Frappé is an iced coffee drink which is made from instant coffee and covered with foam.
Frappé was invented in 1957 in Thessaloniki during the International Trade Fair by an employee of the Nestlé company. He wanted to have an instant coffee during his break but couldn't find any hot water. So he used a shaker to mix instant coffee with cold water and ice cubes. This improvised drink turned out to be a success. It is one of the most popular drinks in modern Greece.
Greek frappé is typically made with spray-dried instant coffee, sugar, and water. Sometimes milk is added. The beverage can be flavored with liqueurs such as Baileys Irish Cream or Kahlúa. Outside Greece, the espresso version of frappé is popular. In the United States, the term “frappe” can be applied to various iced coffee beverages, either chilled or frozen. Starbucks has its own trademark for a line of frozen coffee drinks – Frappucino.
To celebrate the National Frappé Day, have a nice cup of iced coffee. You can top it with chocolate syrup, whipped cream, or a ball of ice-cream. -

Grandparents' Day exists in the United Kingdom for a long time, but it's still not so popular, as Mother's Day and Father's Day. Annually many organizations promote it and special cards are printed to congratulate elderly people on this holiday.
Grandparents' Day was established in the United Kingdom by the charity Age Concern (it merged with Help the Aged in 2008 and now it's known as Age UK) in 1990. Since 2008 it's annually celebrated on the first Sunday in October.
Grandparents' Day is a perfect day for all grandmothers and grandfathers to spend a day with their grandchildren, if they don't see each other on a regular basis. Grandparents may involve their grandchildren in a number of interesting events: take them to a zoo or organize a family reunion BBQ. When everyone is tired of noisy events, take some rest and look at family photos.
Parents should encourage their children to make special card, a present or even a cake (with the help of adults, of course) for Grandparents' Day. This will make your Grandparents' Day perfect and your family will always remember it. -

Athletics commentatiors are so biased towards the favourites
I only watch athletics when its a major championships. I know its a silly thing but I thought it was good when say, David Coleman, name checked and country checked every runner in every race. Just thought it was good that the no hopers got at least 15 seconds of fame. And I could think, good luck only competiror from the Galapagos Islands.
But now when they line up, as soon as there is a GB athlete or say the defending champion the commentator witters on about every race and time they've posted and the rest of the lineup gets ignored. -

Dad wanted to watch The Met - Policing London on the Iplayer today. I put the subtitles on as he willl keep asking me to turn the volume up a bit. But they were useless. They were so out of synch with the sound. The 3rd phrase was being spoken when the subtitle for the 1st phrase appeared on the screen. it was ridiculous.
A couple of times they almost caught up, but then they had a bit with talking and no subtitles and it went back to two phrases behind again.
I think the issue is caused by the warnings of offensive language and scenes that some might not like etc. -

The BFI London Film Festival is the largest film festival in Great Britain. It’s annually held by the British Film Institute, promoting the art of film making and television. The festival is held in October.
The idea of the festival belongs to the group of critics, who in 1953 though of organizing a big film festival in Great Britain. Their festival was to be alike such renowned festivals, as in Cannes, Venice and Edinburgh. The festival would give the audience an opportunity to watch the films, that had never been screened in British cinemas.
However, their idea wasn’t realized till 1956, when the very first BFI London Film Festival was held. The festival was running from October 16 till 26, and its program wasn’t very rich. Only 15-20 films were screened that year, but the names of their directors were already known to the audience: Akira Kurosawa, Andrzej Wajda, Luchino Visconti, Yasujirō Ozu.
The current program of the festival is richer than it was in the beginning. Nowadays the audience is presented with over 300 films, including shorts and documentary, from around 50 countries. The highly anticipated films, that have never been screened in Great Britain, and the films by young directors are preferred. Also restored filmed are frequently screened.
The BFI London Film Festival has a competitive part, and its main award is the Sutherland Trophy. It was created in 1958 and named after the British Film Institute’s patron George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland. The trophy was awarded to such prominent directors as Bernardo Bertolucci, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Jean-Luc Godard and Michelangelo Antonioni.
The other awards are also presented during the festival. For instance, the Grierson Award, that is given for the best documentary, Best British Newcomer Award (given to directors, producers and screenwriters), BFI Fellowship and other awards, that are given to different organizations.

World Smile Day is an informal holiday celebrated on the first Friday of October. It was created by the American commercial artist Harvey Ball in 1999. Ball is credited with creating the smiley face in 1963.
In 1963, Ball was employed by the State Mutual Life Assurance Company of Worcester, Massachusetts as a freelance artist. He was tasked with creating a symbol that would boost the employees' morale. It took Ball less than ten minutes to create it, and so the smiley face was born.
Over the years, Ball became concerned about the increasing commercialization of the smiley face. To remind people of its original meaning and intent, he created World Smile Day. The holiday's motto is “Do an act of kindness. Help one person smile”. On this day, people are encouraged to smile at each other, bringing good cheer to the world.
Ball passed away in 2001. To honor his memory, the Harvey World Smile Foundation was established. The Foundation continues to organize World Smile Day as its official sponsor. Every year, numerous World Smile Day events are held thorough the world. They may include, but are not limited to, performances, concerts, flash mobs, charitable events, etc.
Every year, the Foundation presents a Harvey Ball Smile Award to a deserving community leader on the occasion of the holiday. -

is an annual event that takes place in the United Kingdom and Ireland on the first or second Thursday in October. It was founded in 1994 by British philanthropist, publisher and entrepreneur William Sieghart.
Sieghart founded National Poetry Day to promote poetry by drawing media attention for it. Since its inception, the campaign has become a permanent fixture in the British calendar of cultural events. Every year, it engages millions of people across the United Kingdom and Ireland with various events, such as public performances, broadcasts, classroom activities, etc. National Poetry Day events take place in libraries, bookstores, schools, arts centers, and even pubs and public transportation.
The campaign is coordinated by the Forward Arts Foundation. Sieghart established the Foundation in 1991 to extend the audience of modern poetry and raise poetry's profile. National Poetry Day is not the only project of the Foundation. For example, it also awards the Forward Prizes for Poetry. National Poetry Day is run in collaboration with a number of partners in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
From 1999 onwards, the campaign has been loosely themed. The theme serves as a source of inspiration rather than a directive. The first ever National Poetry Day theme was “Song Lyrics”. -

This does not include disability benefits only people seeking employment. I think good idea, lovely weather now so helping outside is no hardship.
Those who refuse to help out with the aftermath of the floods will lose their benefits for 6 months. The Spanish don't mess about just tell them to get on with it. -

Walk to school day --sorry late --- now walk from school ????
is an annual awareness event that typically takes place on the first Wednesday in October. It was established in 1997 and has been held each year ever since.
Walk to School Day was created in order to raise awareness of the importance of improved, safer and more accessible streets, less traffic, and reduced air pollution in communities across the USA. It also aims to promote healthier habits and active lifestyle from an early age. The first campaign was held in 1997, it was called Walk Our Children to School Day.
Since 2006, informational and technical support and resources for National Walk to School Say in the United States have been provided by the National Center for Safe Routes to School, an organization that helps states and communities implement Safe Routes to Schools programs. These programs aim to enable and encourage children to safely walk or bike to school.
Over time, Walk to School Day has become an international event. Each October, thousands of children from more than 40 countries walk to school instead of taking city/school buses or being driven by their parents. Parents, schools, community leaders and all levels of government join efforts to organize Walk to School Day events and spread the word. -
Today was rubbish and recycling collection day. At 5pm it was obvious the general waste collection had been missed. Went on to the Bromley webpage to report a missed collection. Under my address was the message that the general waste was not collected because I had not presented it in time, or it was not close enough to the edge of my property.
The button to report a missed collection deliberately greyed out. Only option was to send feedback.
I todl them all my rubbish and recycling is put out the night before. The paper recycling box and food waste box are at the property edge, and put the general rubbish close as I can next to them. Told them I'm leaving the rubbish in the front garden for them to collect in their own time.
Really tempted to deliberately leave the bags of rubbish actually just on the public pavement. Maybe they will see them then. -

Sake Day is a Japanese national observance, that is spreading across the world. People celebrate this holiday annually on October 1 since 1978, when it was declared by the Japan Sake Brewers Association.
Celebration of Sake Day on October 1 is connected with the fact, that it's brewing season always starts in this month and it lasts till April. The best way to celebrate this holiday is drinking sake. If October 1 falls on working day, be free to start celebration on the weekend before or after this day.
Sake is made from fermented rice and it's often referred to as wine, but it's really more like beer, however its production really differs from the process of brewing beer. Sake is a national beverage in Japan, that is why serving it requires a special ceremony.
During the last years celebration of Sake Day spread all over the world and its generally known as World Sake Day. People pay tribute to sake and gather at breweries in Canada, the USA, Great Britain to enjoy fresh sake and cocktails.
