Just a very decent movie. Any movie in 2019 covering similar topic would seem a very risky undertaking. This one however managed to pull off a well-balanced but honest picture of papacy in present times.
And may I say bravo for the acting skill of the two Welshmen, esp. Jonathan Pryce.
-
Is anyone going to watch it?
I lost interest in the movies after The Force Awakens, the the films have nothing in common any more with those I grew up with (the original trilogy) and I do not even get the story any more.
I've spent some time last night watching some reviews (who mostly trashed it), so "Watch it, I will not". -
Has anyone else seen the Irishman on Netflix?
With Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino.
Its epic. Three and a half hours long.
A tale of comradeship, loyalty and ultimately betrayal. Covering decades and using CGI to assist the process of ageing.
A masterpiece?
I found the first hour hard going, the second interesting and at times exciting and the third moving, the final half hour thought provoking and emotional.
Exceptional acting by DeNiro and Pacino with Joe Pesci as the third member of the mob. The 30 minute conversation after the film is a must see. -
Before the winter chill (Edited)
Found on BBC iplayer
2013 French subtitled psychological drama.
Reviews were varied and I felt that some critics had not watched the film as they did not seem to understand it. One said it was fragile and confused!
I found it thought provoking, clever and at times touching.
There certainly was a twist at the end.
Kristen Scott Thomas as the wife of the neurosurgeon was exceptional.
The story is about how a thirty year marriage starts to unravel as the husband appears to be being stalked whilst the wife starts to believe he may be having an affair.
I would recommend it. -
Last Christmas - is it the worst ever Christmas film?
I've not seen it but, that's what film critics have said.
Is it just Andrew Ridgely (the one that couldn't sing) cashing in on George Michael? We know what happened to Shirlie, but what happened to Pepsi? -
What are you thoughts about "Joker"? As a standalone film I found it very well done, however in the context of the DC Universe I have problems with the Joker character. I kind of liked the older origin story by Alan Moore ( "The Killing Joke", I mean the comic, not the bad animated movie they made out of it ).

There have been some terrific drama series on TV recently.
Two that I have watched on the Iplayer were Gold digger and Cold Call. What others have members enjoyed? -
New series of Young Offenders starts tonight BBC1 10.35pm. A very modern comedy full of bad language and petty crime but also true friendship, love and family. I have already cheated and binge watched half the series on the iplayer. Just couldn't wait. The relationship between the lads is just brilliant.

Just watched it and I have some mixed feelings. First half appeared to me quite boring, only started getting interesting towards the end.
Overall, it's a good watch, but I prefer when each episode has its own "punch line", if you will.
Also, not really sure about the personal stories they chuck in there - I understand they wanted to show how both work and private life affects each other - but still, I think it didn't bring much to the table.
Anyone watched it? -
Although now a 6 year old film being shown on TV. This is a film worth watching and reviewing. Directed by Gore Verbinski of Pirates of the Caribbean and Rango, starring Johnnie Depp, Arnie Hammer, Ruth Wilson and Helena Bonham Carter.
The first feature length film on this subject based on a radio show, for 32 years.
Although around 160 minutes long I was (once again) transfixed even on my second viewing in recent years. As always Johhnie Depp is convincing in the unusual role of Tonto and rather than being the Lone Ranger's sidekick steals the show. The white horse (later known as Silver) is comical without seeming bizarre or ridiculous.
A must watch in my books. Made by Disney and apparently a box office flop...but it was up against Despicable Me2 at the time!
A fantasy film with a warm heart and some unbelievable stunts and laughs. -
With an unlikely plot . Scriptwriting for a propaganda film in the war I hadn't expected much. However I was pleasantly surprised and would recommend. Shown on BBC a few nights ago, available on the iplayer. Perfectly acted. Loved Bill Nighy's part. Funny, poignant, romantic and sad.

A simple favour (Edited)
I watched this movie on Netflix a few days ago and I was presently surprised. it was 100% better than I thought it would be. You should all watch it.
-
2014 film with Adam Sandler.
Surprise to me and a good one.
A fantasy film with a 'magic' mechanical stitching machine. Sounded ludicrous.
But it certainly wasn't for kids.
At times funny and poignant, clever and well written.
Shoes repaired on the machine were stepped into and turned the wearer (Adam Sandler) into the owner of the shoes (walking in their footsteps). He eventually used this for good but in the meantime got into some awful scrapes. Just watch everyone wearing the red scarf!
The film got even better when Dustin Hoffman arrived (one of my favourite actors)
Yes, it did bring a tear to my eyes. More than once. Brilliantly different. -
2016 film Keanu
Billed as a comedy action film. At times violent and with extreme bad language, this film surprisingly revolves around a cute kitten. And how far a man and his friend will go to get him (Keanu) back when he is stolen by a frightening gang of drug dealers.
On netflix. With a twist at the end and a hilarious surprise with who played some of the parts its a MUST WATCH.
Tip: watch after the titles βΊ
PS Keanu Reeves's voice is used during a sequence where the kitten 'talks' π -
Stranger Things: Season 3. Haven't seen yet.
I watched season 1 and 2. First one - obviously great. Second one - far worse but it was still worth watching.
Based on the information above, shall I bother to watch the season 3? ;)
Anyone seen it yet? -
Most anticipated movie right now ...
I think mine is "Once upon a time in Hollywood" ... Tarantino, Charles Manson, DeCaprio & Brad Pitt, what can possibly go wrong?
-
Best quote from a movie in 2019 - so far
OK I know its only the end of July, but what's your best movie quote of 2019?
Gonna put mine in the comment.
(@CitizenW I know yours already ;) ) -
Another horror type movie. Certificate 15. Filmed as if the children involved are making a documentary about the visit to the grandparents whom they have never met.
Spooky and chilling , the children quickly notice something isn't right. Creepy and in places quite terrifying. Then there's the twist.
Would recommend. But glad I didn't watch it alone. -
Until I noticed this on Netflix I had never heard of it but I read later that is was one of the most profitable and successful films of 2017, and won an award for its original screenplay.
Wow I can see why. Not my usual genre at all. Blew my mind. Fabulous, frightening, thrilling, intriguing, remarkably clever, twists and turns and very well named: in the last half hour I must have screamed 'get out' at least 20 times (what must my neighbours think). -
This was on TV last night and I have to admit I only watched it as a last resort, as I couldn't find anything else on TV.
But what a surprise I had. Admittedly lots of bad language and very unrealistic and far fetched but so very funny. And it even had an old fashioned American style moral to it.
The good guys won. In more ways than one. They learnt from their mistakes and everyone lived happily ever after. Watch it if you can. You will SMILE. -
I've seen it last Sunday - and I must say I quite liked it. Not as good as the first one, but still quite cheeky.
Kevin Hart as Snowball great as before.
Best scene: Chloe being high with White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane in the background ;)
If anyone one is after a light and non-tiring movie that's a safe bet.

Chernobyl - a must see apparently
Anyone here watched it? I haven't yet myself, but shortly planning to.
The rating speaks for itself and everyone who seen it is amazed apparently - so my hopes are very high.

I would totally forget we have this Green Book review we did with DImi.

How to slaughter a great book: Amazon's Man in the High Castle (Edited)
When I read that Amazon would turn Phillip K Dicks Novel into a TV Series I was sceptical and rightly so. To be honest, I only watched a few episodes and then gave up, but what really pissed me off was how much they missed the core message of the book.
The worst in the TV Series is the concept of the "resistance". In the book there is no resistance, people accept the world ( in which the Nazis and Japan have won the war and occupied the US ) as the "logical" historical outcome, they can't imagine a different course of history. The only character in the book who could be perceived as "resistance" is a german officer who is extremely disillusioned and pragmatic, to the depressing extend that his only "hope" is to support the SS versus the german army ( which wants a nuclear war ).
And this is the whole point of the novel, the fact that there is a book inside the novel most of the characters read or hear about which shows them that there ARE possibilities and that history could have ( and still can ) take a very different course. They all at some point get it on a different level, either understanding that the book is a threat or something which gives hope. Simply understanding that the world doesn't have to be like this IS the message. Amazon's series tries something simlar with "forbidden films" but it just doesn't work, because it is not about getting hold of that film material ( as in the series ) but about the idea.
As a sidenote, in that way Amazon did to the novel a similar thing the movie version did to "V for Vendetta".
Rant over ;) -
First half of the year itβs slmost over, Which one is the best movie so far you have seen?

Tolkien - any good? (Edited)
Anyone seen Tolkien movie? I love Tolkien as writer but on the fence to watch the movie. I heard it didn't cover most basic things about his life, so bit off-putting.
-
Anyone saw it? Im not into manggha or such but seemed like utter crap :/ excuse my Japanese.. I mean French.
