The car park at NESCOT - North East Surrey College of Technology. They all look new. Trying to find out why they are sitting there. For several weeks. Rumours abound! Made in Germany, have manufacturing fault. Two companies are arguing over who will run the service. Failed ULEZ compliance! Or maybe it's performance art... Any suggestions? -

Jury selection starts on Monday. Or does it? Trump can sack his defence team to enforce a delay... Trump the superfit genius could have a sudden illness... Do you regard the first criminal trial of an ex US President as really important? NB the trial is expected to take 6 weeks - this might be a long running post. -

Scottish police received more than 7,000 complaints about possible hate crimes in the first week of the country’s controversial new law. Only 240 of the reports have been recorded as hate crimes for investigation by Police Scotland, with the vast majority not deemed worthy of further attention. Your thoughts... -

Chris Quinn, the editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, has published a "Letter from the Editor" .... "This is a tough column to write, because I don’t want to demean or insult those who write me in good faith. I’ve started it a half dozen times since November but turned to other topics each time because this needle hard to thread. No matter how I present it, I’ll offend some thoughtful, decent people. The north star here is truth. We tell the truth, even when it offends some of the people who pay us for information. The truth is that Donald Trump undermined faith in our elections in his false bid to retain the presidency. He sparked an insurrection intended to overthrow our government and keep himself in power. No president in our history has done worse. This is not subjective. We all saw it. Plenty of leaders today try to convince the masses we did not see what we saw, but our eyes don’t deceive. (If leaders began a yearslong campaign today to convince us that the Baltimore bridge did not collapse Tuesday morning, would you ever believe them?) Trust your eyes. Trump on Jan. 6 launched the most serious threat to our system of government since the Civil War. You know that. You saw it." Trump may be convicted of serious crimes shortly. And sentenced to serve a prison sentence. Are you worried about the consequences? -

"Schools separate learning from life. While doing this, they assume that what children do at school is more important than what they do at home, and that school activities have their right to invade home life. The same is not true in reverse. Parents are not able to direct activities for children to complete at school, or free to take their child out in term time. Parents may spend more time with their children than teachers, but it's the teacher who tells the parents how the children are doing on "Parent's Evening". Your thoughts? Today is the final day in Putin's "election" which he will win - as he has "won" consistently for the past 30 years. At noon there will be a surge of voting. This has been publicised so that voters can see just how many of them want him out. They cannot be arrested - they might be voting for Putin - but they can look around them and see their strength in numbers. It's a wonderful world when your vote counts... -

Maybe I was the only Slooper watching Biden's address at 3am? It was well worth watching. Any doubts about Biden's health and mental acuity can be put aside. The sullen silence of the Republicans and their subsequent responses would indicate they recognise the current "opinion polls" in favour of Trump might even be "rigged" - Heaven forbid! -

A ventriloquist is holidaying in the outback. He sees a drover on his horse, with his dog, herding some sheep, and thinks he'll have some fun. He stops, and the drover rides over to his car. Ventriloquist. "Hi, how're you? Can I talk to your dog?" Drover. [ hesitating, thinking the sun has got to the guy ] Okay...sure. Vent. "How's it going mate" Dog. "Beaut Mate. Lots of exercise, and good food. Bonza". Vent. " Mind if I talk to your horse?" Drover [ Amazed ] For sure. Vent. "Hey, horse, what's the life like here?". Horse "Real good. Regular trail work, best oats, brushed down every night and sleep in a clean stable." The drover is completely amazed, he can't believe it. Ventriloquist asks if he can chat to the sheep? Drover stutters "They're all liars!" -

A man goes into pub and invites the landlord to give him free drinks if he can entertain his customers to stay all night. He gets a hamster out of his pocket and puts it on the piano at the end of the bar. Immediately the hamster runs up and down the keyboard and produces a superb selection of pop, classical and country music. The customers are entranced, word gets round quickly, and the pub is crowded out. "Fantastic" says the landlord, is there anything else the hamster does?" The man produces a parrot, and sets it on top of the piano. The audience is now silent and expectant. The hamster strikes a key - starts to play, and the parrot delivers the most amazing repertoire of arias, pop hits, classic Sinatra and more. The landlord is delighted. "I must have these animals - will you sell them to me please!" The man shakes his head. "Will you sell one of them please!!" "OK, I'll sell you the parrot for five thousand pounds". The landlord is delighted and quickly goes to his safe and brings back the cash. The man says good-bye with a touching farewell to the parrot, and leaves. As he goes outside a customer says to him " you're a bit stupid parting with that parrot"? "No I'm not" the man replies, "the hamster's a ventriloquist"! -

"Nearly 60 years after its release, “Mary Poppins” has been reclassified by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) because it features “discriminatory language,” the BBC reported. The film, which stars Julie Andrews in the titular role, has been raised from a U rating (synonymous to a G rating) to a PG rating. The change is due to the film’s usage of “Hottentot,” a derogatory term for the Khoikhoi — the traditionally nomadic pastoralist indigenous population of South Africa — originally used by Dutch settlers. The term is said twice by Admiral Boom, who first mentions it while conversing with one of the Banks children, and then uses it as a descriptor for the chimney sweeps with soot-covered faces. “We understand from our racism and discrimination research…that a key concern for…parents is the potential to expose children to discriminatory language or behavior which they may find distressing or repeat without realizing the potential offense,” a BBFC spokesperson told the Daily Mail. “Content with immediate and clear condemnation is more likely to receive a lower rating.” The rating change only affects the cinema version of the film. The home entertainment versions are still rated U, according to the BBFC." Good to know the jobsworth market is in safe hands? Your thoughts. -

More than 2% of all births in the U.S.A. occur as a result of assisted reproductive technology, mostly through IVF, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. IVF treatment typically involves the creation of multiple embryos in order to maximize the chance of a successful pregnancy, leaving some unused and eventually destroyed as medical waste. But Friday's Alabama Court ruling held that such embryos are children and people can be held liable for their destruction. Your thoughts. -

Clarence Thomas has a life-long appointment to the US Supreme Court. In 2023 "ProPublica" uncovered evidence that this senior Supreme Court justice took hundreds of thousands of dollars in undisclosed gifts over a long period. Thomas had wealthy buddies cover private school tuition for his family on his behalf, provide his mother rent-free housing, funnel money from a right-wing advocacy group to his wife under the table, and buy him an RV. [ Recreation Vehicle ] He has now been offered $1million a year pension and a £2 million vehicle to retire by John Oliver, a TV show host. Thomas has denied wrongdoing and said he was advised that he did not need to disclose trips and gifts from wealthy donors, who are some of his “dearest friends.” “Early in my tenure at the court, I sought guidance from my colleagues and others in the judiciary, and was advised that this sort of personal hospitality from close personal friends, who did not have business before the court, was not reportable,” Thomas said in a statement in April, The Washington Post previously reported. In the wake of deep scrutiny, the Supreme Court announced in November that it had adopted a new code of conduct, but that it did not have a way to enforce those standards against those who fall short. Clarence Thomas has for years claimed income from a defunct real estate firm It was for that reason that Oliver decided it was time to put his own pocket on the line. And if $1 million a year until either of the men die is not enough, Oliver said, then taking the deal is probably “the perfect way to find out who your real friends actually are.” -
