To exclude a word from search results, place a - preceded by a space before the word. So, if you are looking for a toaster, and don't want results from amazon, type the following without the quotes 'toaster -amazon'.
Looking around Scooploop I have seen the effect that members leaving has. If you decide to 'leave' Scooploop, then unless you have a reason to delete your posts/comments, then there is no reason to do anything. There are more than 10,000 members on Scooploop, if you look at their profiles you will see many with no activity at all. These accounts are doing no harm; the member may be a reader or no longer be around.
If you just want to not be involved in Scooploop for a while for some reason, you could turn off PMs, so as not to waste people's time, and put some information in your profile. You can then 'return' at any time.
Deleting your account leaves a post with deleted comments, and ruins the post for readers, current and future. Look back on some old posts to see for yourself.
Also, if you are a big contributor in a loop, deleting your account deprives members of any interesting/useful information you have posted. If I were to delete my account, then the IT loop would be almost empty.

To search a particular site for say a particular subject, you can precede the site address with 'site:', then, after the site's address, leave a space and enter what you are looking for. So, to look on Scooploop for posts about Covid, you would type the following, without the quotes, in the address bar:
'site:scooploop.com covid'
BT 14.4% price increase (Edited)
Landline/Mobile calls/Broadband - BT Landline and BT Mobile services (including most rental and call prices and the cost of calling or texts to EU countries) will increase on or after 31 March each year from March 2023 by CPI plus 3.9%. This is a 14.4% increase, which is in line with the 10.5% CPI rate of inflation published in January, plus 3.9%
Gmail/Google problems - ongoing
Still have the problem with my Gmail account
It comes up as a sort of 'virgin' site with no messages and nothing in labels.
I have to sign out of Google and sign in again and then sign into gmail but it often takes 4 attempts to get my old version back.
What could be stopping them from coming in ?
It is not in airplane mode and phone calls come through okay
Does Zoom update automatically on Windows 10?
I've been using Zoom since early in lockdown but didn't have an account, just followed links to classes etc set up by other people. While using an old laptop PC running Windows 7, I had to update Zoom manually to reduce malfunctions during sessions.
Having replaced the laptop with one running Windows 10, I hoped that I'd no longer have to update Zoom manually but it's been malfunctioning again lately. I've updated it (I think) and set up a personal account, in case that helps - but have really no idea how to make this simpler.
What do the more technically minded do to keep Zoom running smoothly?
No mail in Gmail (Edited)
For the last few days I have not had anything in my Gmail, nothing from Scooploop and nothing from anywhere else, not even spam/junk what could be wrong ?
Scooploop Android app - See latest comment. (Edited)
I have just noticed, that for some reason, the app is no longer available on the Play Store. So you will not be able to install on a new device, or reinstall it on an existing device.
It comes up as just a little square in right top corner, am now using Firefox but prefer Chrome and my usual layout.
The Copper Switch-off - Part two
As a test to "encourage" users to upgrade from the old copper network, Openreach is going to limit the download speed to around 2Mbps and prevent outward phone calls (other than emergency services, alarms etc.) in Salisbury in Wiltshire and Mildenhall in Suffolk. Reduction of the broadband speed will start in April, and the prevention of calls will start 5th June.

When Samsung send updates on their mobiles why does it change lots of settings and often apps as well, it takes ages to get your phone to get it back to how it was. Also, we had 2 updates in 2days it seems we are getting updates weekly now and they always change some settings
Government emergency mobile phone alerts
The government is planning to start an emergency service this year that uses mobile phones to broadcast warnings. These alerts will use 4G and 5G. Full details here, watch the video:

I'm not getting S/loop notifications by email at the moment for some reason but looking to see if I've hit the wrong button, notifications offer email and push (all turned on), just wondered what push means, please.
I did something yesterday which has messed up the laptop, think I installed Chrome which sent it funny so I uninstalled. This hasn't helped at all. Could someone tell me please how to get to the bit where you can go back 24 hours and hopefully that will correct it - thanks!
Beware Windows 11 startup advert
If you don't want Windows 11, beware Windows 11 Amazon Prime type screens. Read carefully before clicking anything.
This YouTube add-on will add many controls to YouTube. Amongst the many controls, it can increase the volume, take screenshots and change speed.

I got 2 BT landline phones. One phone is not ringing. I know it is quite simple to restore but forgot which button to press. to unmute? Can not find it in menu.
LastPass did not reveal the full extent of the hack. A security expert says that you should assume that your passwords have been, or could be compromised, and you should change your master password and every password in your vault.
I have noticed members having trouble viewing websites. This is due to using cookie blockers. To be able to view the website, you have to click the cookie notice which you can't see.
I thought these automatically happened with updates but it says I have to download and install.
What are they exactly and what could an update do ?
Samsung Galaxy S22+ to Windows 10 PC sync issues
I have a Samsung Galaxy S22+ Android phone and two Windows computers.
The phone will connect to my spare computer via USB to transfer files but when I connect to my main computer Windows 10 says that the device is not recognised.
I use the same cable each time and both computers run Windows 10 64 bit.
All my other USB devices work fine and I've tried different USB sockets - hard wired to the motherboad, Front drivebay and hub.
It used to work ok on my main computer so I suspect that a Windows update has changed something.
The reason this is an issue is that i want to update my contacts from Microsoft Outlook on my main computer to my phone using Samsung Smartswitch.
Alternatively is there any way to do this over bluetooth?
Any suggestions about how to fix this will be welcome.
Watching YouTube videos without the adverts
The easiest way to do this is to use the Brave browser. This automatically removes adverts at the beginning and during the video. Other browsers need to have an extension which is a small easily added program. If you use Chrome or Edge browsers, you can get the extension here: https://bit.ly/3GxxPnH
If you use Firefox, see the comment below.

Need to make an emergency mobile phone call, but there is no signal?
Owners of an iPhone 14 that have iOS 16.1 installed, can now contact emergency services via satellite. You can also share your location via satellite.
The Copper Switch off (Edited)
Many people do not realise that their landline will be disconnected by the end of 2025. This has already happened in some areas. A recent survey found that 69% of people 65 and over did not know this. In short, you must have a broadband connection to be able to use a 'landline' phone. If you do not have broadband you will need a mobile phone. For full information, google 'Copper switch off'.
Having had to watch TV on my laptop after my old TV set died, until I could get the new one delivered and set up, I got used to using the laptop that way. So I sometimes still do, mainly for convenience.
But does it use more or less energy than a TV? A web search threw up few directly relevant comparisons, some of which made no sense at all.
What details do I need for each device to make an accurate comparison?
I gave in to the message that l should upgrade to Windows 11 which kept appearing with insistence each time l opened the laptop.
I immediately had problems with the broadband and couldn't get on the internet to revert to Windows 10.
I couldn't find anyone to contact from Microsoft without Internet access and as a result find myself saddled with Windows 11. Each time my laptop is idle for over 5 minutes l lise the internet connection and have to switch off completely, restart doesn't work.
Any advice about how to go back to Windiws 10? I still can't connect directly to
Microsoft help line. It's incredible how such a company can even not have a durect gelpline and direct you to a forum!
I have a Samsung Galaxy TAB A 10.1 (about 2/3 years old) and it does not have a QR scanning facility so far as I have been able to determine. I wondered if anyone can recvommend a reliable QR scanner app? I tried a couple from the Google Playstore but both wanted me to regiser and give a credit card even though the app is free - which I am loath to do.
Do you use LastPass password manager? LastPass security breach
Personal information and encrypted data was stolen from LastPass. If you have a weak LastPass master password, you are at some slight risk of your vault information being compromised, so you should begin changing passwords. Vaults protected by strong master passwords remain secure. You don’t need to leave LastPass, but it’s understandable that you might. Do not avoid password vaults completely, however; choose an appropriate replacement instead.
If your LastPass master password was appropriately strong, you don’t need to do anything. The contents of your password vault are not at significant risk.
If your LastPass master password is not appropriately strong, consider changing the passwords of all “important” accounts stored in your vault as soon as possible, and all accounts eventually.
Appropriately strong master password:
12 characters (ideally longer)
A mix of character types (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, symbols)
Memorable, but not easily guessed
Unique: it’s only used as your master password

Do I need it ?

What do I need it for ?
When is a modern boiler just a malfunctioning computer?
My almost brand-new condensing gas boiler suddenly lost its pilot light this afternoon, after I'd had the heating on for a short time. (Annoyingly, the malfunction also blew out the bulb on my reading light, which isn't at all standard and for which I have no spare. The lamp was plugged into the socket nearest the boiler cupboard; the computer etc multi-way which use a different socket were fine. A different lamp worked fine in the same socket as the blown one had been using.)
Panicking my way through Worcester's immense user manual in search of 'pilot light' or some equivalent produced nothing but I noticed that it wasn't just the light but the entire display panel that had gone dark.
Just on spec, I tried the computer reset trick - turned the electrical supply to the boiler off and on again, in case that might tell me whether I'd have to replace the rather inaccessible fuse. The boiler then came back on, pilot light and all. Should that be the user's first recourse if their boiler suddenly goes dark?

Ampersands (Edited)
Has anyone else found that when you type an ampersand after a letter without a space it doesn't show up when you post the comment? Hopefully this will demonstrate it as I'll type M & S with no spaces between M&S. - odd isn't it. 've been caught out and found that the post didn't really make sense as a result😎.
Well, that could have been another Kahuti! To find out if a website is working, go to 'Is It Working Right Now' and type in the address of the site where it says Facebook: https://bit.ly/3W4NoZ4
I use my phone (iphone 7) for absolutely everything. I am short of memory and can no longer download updates. I have deleted lots but am running out of stuff to delete.
Do I need to get a new phone or a new sim or do something else?
Please advise using only words a 3 year old would understand. Thanks in anticipation.
TV has suddenly lost its channel hold
My admittedly old Toshiba TV has ceased to be able to hold onto a channel at all. Is there anything I can do to fix that?
It was fine until last night, when I had already tuned to BBC1 before a programme that I'd meant to watch. When the timer reminder asked me whether I wanted to keep or cancel the timed programme, the remote control wouldn't respond, whichever way I clicked - which isn't unheard of - but the channel number suddenly began scrolling backwards and wouldn't stop doing so.
Turning the TV right off and leaving it for a long period only results in the TV initially showing BBC1 for a couple of seconds, then scrolling backwards through the channels before I can switch it to any other channel manually.
I've not noticed any model number on the TV itself but the remote control is marked "Toshiba CT-90326".
Https and a padlock at the beginning of a website's address, do not mean the site is safe. This site will explain: http://bit.ly/3VnsXpS
I just had an email from security@facebookmail.com saying 'Hi Diana,
We've noticed that you're having trouble with logging in to your account. If you need help, click the button below and we'll log you in.
Log In with One Click
Why have you received this email?
There was an unsuccessful login attempt on your account. If this wasn't you, let us know.'
Address given was Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd., Attention: Community Operations, 4 Grand Canal Square, Dublin 2, Ireland
So I checked that this was a legit email address, but then found advice that if in doubt, check the security and login on your Settings page - and there I saw 'We haven't sent you any emails about security in the last two weeks'
So, hmm, does that count as an email about security? I'm not sure whether this email is legit or not – I suppose the FB address might have been spoofed . . .
