Advise on dating from Action Fraud Alert

      Lonely Hearts Romance Fraudster Alert

The NFIB have become aware of techniques used by romance fraudsters against people using dating sites. Not only will they steal your heart they will steal your money and your identification.

When you think you’ve met the perfect partner through an online dating website or app, but the other person is using a fake profile to form a relationship with you. They’re using the site to gain your trust and ask you for money or enough personal information to steal your identity.

A dating fraudster, previously involved in deceiving people that wanted a friendship explained how they would create fake accounts with social media platforms so that their details matched and could be searched. By appearing to be a real person their fake persona could be corroborated by prospective partners searching their background and believe them to be genuine. The fraudster said:

“People like to live in fairy tales to say it won’t happen to me. I make sure all my conversations are bespoke. I will show insecurity myself about trusting people and this helps allude to them that I’m genuine.”

The fraudster will also utilise as many accessible online research tools to explore people’s information for their own personal gain or sell onwards. The fraudster elaborated and explained:

“I use various online directories to find out about the person. Once I have enough, I use it to milk everything I can using their details or sell them on to other fraudsters via the dark web”

When asked how people could check if a person is real. The romance fraudster offered advice for others searching for a relationship. They told us that after you see a picture of them:

“Ask for them to send you another photo of themselves posing with their thumbs up or waving. It’s like a form of 2 factor authentication and makes it hard to do if it’s not an original picture”

      What you need to do

      · Avoid sharing too many personal details when on online dating profiles. Revealing your full name, date of birth, or full home address may lead to your identity being stolen.

      · Never respond to any requests to send money, or have money transferred into your account by someone you don’t know and trust. These types of requests should always raise a red flag. If something feels wrong then it is usually right to question it.

      · Pick a reputable dating website or app, and use the built-in messaging service. Fraudsters want to quickly switch to social media or texting so there’s no evidence of them asking you for money.

      Message Sent By
Action Fraud (Action Fraud, Administrator, National)

I thought ---asked for a 2nd photo --- very interesting --- not that I would ever need the service.

Dad's Army - The Lost Episodes

There were 3 episodes of the original series that were never shown but were recently found in the archives. Instead of broadcasting the original black & white episodes, the shows have been remade with new actors using the original scripts.

They have been showing them on Gold. I missed it on Sunday because I was watching Dragons Den and my OSG said it was on catch-up. It's not. But I watched last nights and will watch the last one tonight at 8pm.

It has been really well acted. The new actors have got the original characters just right but without it being an impersonation.

I watched it on All4 last night with my sister who's had kids. Wanted to watch it after hearing there were a lot of complaints and also someone even started an online petition to ban the programme saying it was child cruelty.
We thought the programme was really good and there was nothing cruel about her methods and they were very effective. It was as much about training the parents as it was stopping the kids tantrums.

I didn't know this as not needed my CV for over 10 years. According to a careers advisor my sister spoke to last week she said you should only have your name and a contact that doesn't give away where you live. Like your email or mobile number. She said that whats been happening is employers look up your address to see what kind of area it is and use it to decide whether to call you in for interview. Also to see how you would get to work by public transport and deciding how likely you would be late.

How hanging an air freshner, or fluffy dice, from your mirror could cost you £1,000 !!

      RAC warning

An air freshener hanging from your rear-view mirror could be enough to land you with a £1,000 fine and 3 points on your licence, police are warning.
A new crackdown could deem anything from invasive sat navs, fluffy dice, stickers and dirty windscreens to be obstructing a driver’s view of the road.

Even if the £100 on-the-spot fine is escaped, insurers may refuse to pay out if a driver is involved in an accident while driving with obstructed vision. If the case is taken to court, the fine can increase to £1,000 as well.

While not actually illegal to drive with dirty windscreens or large air fresheners, according to the Highway Code and the Road Traffic Act, drivers are breaking the law if their view of the road is obstructed in any way.

Road Traffic Law states that: “No person shall drive or cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is in such a position that he cannot have proper control of the vehicle or have a full view of the road and traffic ahead.”

It is under this legislation that police have been clamping down on drivers whose vision of the road is obscured by objects placed on or around their windscreen.

The Highway Code states: “Windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision." This means that even having a dirty windscreen might be cause for police to pull you over.

      Do you trust politicians?

A politician is a person active in party politics, or a person holding or seeking office in government. Politicians propose, support and create laws or policies that govern the land and, by extension, its people. Broadly speaking, a "politician" can be anyone who seeks to achieve political power in any bureaucratic institution.

Murder investigation launched after police officer dies - Berkshire

      10:40 16/08/2019

A murder investigation has been launched after a Thames Valley Police officer died following an incident in Berkshire.

Thames Valley Police has launched a murder investigation following a serious incident which occurred at around 11.30pm last night (15/8) near to the A4, Bath Road, between Reading and Newbury.

The incident happened at the crossroads of Ufton Lane and Lambdens Hill, near to Sulhamstead.

Tragically, PC Andrew Harper from the Roads Policing Proactive Unit based at Abingdon Police Station, who was attending a reported burglary, was killed while performing his duties.

A scene watch remains in place at the scene of the incident and Ufton Lane and Lambdens Hill remain closed.

The A4, Bath Road has since re-opened.

Ten people have been arrested on suspicion of murder and are currently in police custody at various police stations across the Thames Valley.

Deputy Chief Constable Jason Hogg said: “Our deepest thoughts at this time are of course with Andrew’s friends and family, who are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

“Our thoughts also extend to all of Andrew’s colleagues within Thames Valley Police.

“As a force we are devastated at the loss of our colleague and will all be supporting each other at this difficult time.”

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Blaik, of the Thames Valley Police Major Crime Unit, said: “This is a tragic incident, and I would like to reassure the public as well as our officers and staff that we have launched a full and thorough investigation to establish what has happened.

“We have made a total of ten arrests in connection with this incident, and those arrested are currently in police custody. Those arrested are all male and aged between 13 and 30.

“I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident to get in touch. If you have any information which you think could be at all relevant to our investigation, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please leave details on our website at https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/tua/tell-us-about/cor/tell-us-about-existing-case-report/ or call 101.”

      Philadelphia Cheese advert banned

It's the one with the two dads looking after the babies. One of them is put on a conveyor belt by mistake because the dad is enjoying the cheese so much. He rescues the baby and says, "better not tell mum".
It's banned by the ASA because it reinforces gender steriotyping.
There was actually just one complaint.
The Volkswagen E-Golf ad was also banned for the same reason after only 3 complaints. It shows a woman on a park bench with a pram.

      Video calling websites

Apart from Skype and Facebook Messenger does anyone know of any websites that allow video calling from a laptop?
The family here have had a once a month Skype chat with my sister in Oman since she moved out there 12 years ago, but earlier this year her Skype was blocked. Oman is one of the countries that has banned Skype, so its a wonder she wasn't blocked sooner.
So we tried the video call option in Facebook Messenger and found it worked if we both used Chrome. That worked ok a few times but now her video camera "can't be found". At least we could still do a voice only call and she could see us.
There is the option of me upgrading to a smartphone so I can use Whatsapp video calling.

How has the main television in your home improved over time?

Only asking as I just got a new one.
Can only remember two televisions back because we keep them until they go wrong or become unwatchable.
The oldest one was I think a Ferguson and think dad bought it either Rumbelows or Dixons. It was a 26 inch. That was big back then. When it finally had to be replaced, dad needed a lot of persuading to go up in size, saying anything bigger would be too big for the room.
Next was a Sony 32 inch Full HD bought from the Sony shop. That was just over 11 years ago and cost £500. We've had to finally replace it because of a dark patch on the screen is making moody dark scenes in dramas almost unwatchable.
And now I have a JVC 40 inch 4K UHD bought online from Currys/PCWorld for £280.
The UHD picture is better than HD, but not sure I would say its 4 times better.

      Why do some people... (Edited)

      ... drone on and on?

Do they really feel that anyone gives a hoot what they think.

Give it up, get on with life, there is so much more to living than trying to prove that you are a better man than someone else - and failing miserably.

I am reminded of someone from a past life who tried to bully people just because he felt he could. Demanding things of people and attempting to ridicule when he failed. He ended up harming his own cause more than he ever gained.

Could I ask that we rub along with people rather than rub against them. I, like everyone else, form an opinion based on an overall picture not just what one person says. So join in and don't try to score points all the time. I will decide who I think is the better person and it will not be influenced by ridicule, other than in an adverse way.

Draw a line in the sand and let's give this group, and all the others, a feel good factor - not make it a platform for nastiness.

      Thank you.

I love Buffet Style eating and watched TV programme from Global in Watford.
The food looked lovely, lots of varieties from different countries.

      Has anyone tried it?

However did not like the time limit and customers were asked to leave. Also some people had to queue for 2 hrs.
What do you think about the time limit?
Maybe it is a new trend and other eating places will follow.
