Was this incident racist? you decide

Today I was 3rd in the checkout queue in Tesco. First in the queue were two ladies. All their shopping had been scanned, a full trolley, except one item that was missing a barcode. The checkout person was Suleyman, an Asian man. First he stood up and waved to try to attract attention but was ignored. Then he pressed his intercom to call the woman who walks around the store with a headset mic on. We heard her answer, but when Suleyman tried to tell her the issue, she cut him off. He tried to call her again but she was ignoring. So he went back to trying to attract attention waving his arms.
After another few minutes being ignored he made the decision to leave his position and find a replacement item with a barcode himself. The woman ahead of me said to the two women with a full trolley of scanned items, " you could just walk out now without paying". We agreed that he shouldn't have left his position but what choice did he have.
So, was he a victim of racism by the fact that he was being ignored.
