Neo Nazi in court
A mother and daughter from Edinburgh are facing prison after admitting a sustained campaign of racist, antisemitic and transphobic abuse online – and distributing extremist flyers in public.
Shirley Craughwell, 51, and her daughter Hannah Craughwell, 27, pleaded guilty to hate crime offences at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. Prosecutors said the pair shared hundreds of extreme right-wing posts, images and videos between 2021 and 2024.
The court heard the material included Holocaust denial, praise for Hitler, racist conspiracy theories and threatening messages. Police also found the women had handed out neo-Nazi flyers in Edinburgh promoting extremist propaganda.
A sheriff described their behaviour as an “appalling and sustained course of racist and anti-Semitic criminal conduct”, adding the volume and intensity of the posts were of serious concern.
Shirley Craughwell was remanded in custody, with the court refusing bail due to the nature of the offending. Her daughter was released on bail while social work reports are prepared ahead of sentencing.
Both women are due back in court next month, where custodial sentences remain on the table.
