Common interlocking paver problems and how to solve them

Interlocking pavers are popular for outdoor surfaces because of their durability, versatility, and aesthetic value. However, like any construction material, they may develop problems over time due to various reasons such as poor installation, harsh weather conditions or heavy traffic. Here are some common interlocking paver problems and how to solve them:

    1) Pavers shifting or settling: If the base underneath the pavers is not well compacted or there is inadequate drainage causing, water accumulation under the pavers can cause movement. To solve this problem, remove the affected area and re-install with the proper base prep of excavating, then add crushed stone before installing bedding sand.

    2) Weeds growing between joints: Poor jointing materials used during installation that allow weed seed penetration will lead to growth in-between seams of your interlocking pavement. It can be solved by using polymeric sand when filling up cracks which prevent future growth.

    3) Fading colours: Exposure to UV light can cause fading on certain types of concrete paving stones. To prevent further damage, make sure you use colour-safe sealers annually.

    4) Stains & Spills: Oil drips from cars, and general spills can affect an unsealed surface. It's important to clean spills promptly with soap and warm water. Even better, explore professional-grade cleaners like muriatic acid. Regular maintenance upkeep, including the above steps, ensures your investment lasts long and improves curb appeal!
