Britain was always welcoming
Britain took in around 250,000 Belgian refugees during World War I after the German invasion of Belgium, making it the largest refugee influx in British history at the time. These refugees, largely civilians, were housed and supported by local committees and organisations across Britain and included skilled workers who helped fill labour shortages, particularly in munitions factories.
