Information, tips and myths - No.28 - Your documents are not in your documents folder!
If you use OneDrive, then your documents are not in your documents folder, they are in OneDrive's documents folder. You can go directly to your real documents folder at C:\Users\enter your user name here\documents. If your OneDrive is full or getting full, then you can use this folder. The same may apply to your photos/videos/music folders.

I can see that some members are having trouble posting links. When you post a link to a website, you should not post it as a link obtained using a search engine and which includes the search engine's name in the result. If you do this, the image which you can usually click will take you to the search engine's website instead, as in this link to X: google.com/search?client=firefox-b-d&...
This is because Scooploop reads the website at the beginning of the link to create the clickable image. Clicking the link instead of the image will take you to the intended location, but to avoid confusion, always post a link directly to the website.

I've always used free AVG on my tablet but now I have to pay.
Is there another free antivirus app that I can use. I've looked on Play Store but can't see one. Any suggestions please? -
Information, tips and myths - No.27 - Phoning 999 when you have no signal (Edited)
If you have no signal, you may still be able to dial 999. This is because your phone is able to use any other available network. Even if another network does not have a stable signal, you may still be able to send a text. To be able to send a text, you need to have registered your phone beforehand. You do this by texting the word ‘register’ to 999, you’ll receive a reply which you need to read and reply to with the word 'yes', you will now be able to text to 999.

Information, tips and myths - No.26 - Myth - HTTP websites are unsafe
An HTTP website is only unsafe if you enter any information into it; viewing the website's contents is safe. HTTPS does not mean that a website is safe: https://www.scooploop.com/thread/https-doesnt-mean-safe

For various reasons, advertisers are currently having a field day in loops. Rather than having to deal with a member after they have advertised, I have created a loop where you can check on guilty members before you admit them.
Click below to join the loop. You can post guilty members who are not shown on the list.

Warning! Using your photo as your avatar (Edited)
Many members use a photo as their avatar. If your avatar is your photo, note that this is one of the personal pieces of information that you should not put on a public website such as Scooploop. Your photo can be used to identify you and be used maliciously or for fraud.
Other things that should never be posted are:
1. Your real name*
2. Address
3. Phone number
4. Email address
5. Date of birth
On Facebook, never post your holiday photos while you are on holiday, or that you are going on holiday.
*I noticed on a friend's Facebook page, a name I recognised from Scooploop. I visited that friend yesterday, and she told me all about that person! -
Tech or Scooploop information/queries
You are more likely to get an answer to any tech or Support questions by posting in the IT or Workshop loops, rather than other open or closed loops.
-
I can see that there is constant confusion about loop types. Here is what is available:
There are 3 different types of Loops to choose from:
Open
Anyone (with a Scooploop account or not) can view the contents of this Loop
Closed
Only members can see the Loop's content
Private*
Only invited members can see the loop and see its content
*Private loops are not visible or detectable. -
Future of Scooploop - SL have announced it will be renewed (Edited)
Scooploop's security certificate expires in 4 weeks. If it is not renewed, anything you send to Scooploop can be intercepted. In case the lights are turned out, it would be wise to get contact details of anyone you wish to stay in touch with now.

Scooploop on Facebook ceased operation in March last year. The last message I had from them said that what happened in any of the loops was of no concern to them, as it was the responsibility of the loop's moderator. -
Information, tips and myths - No.25 - Drying a wet phone with rice
Apple has warned customers that they should not try to dry a wet phone by putting it in rice. The starch in rice can damage a phone. Rice is not an efficient desiccant. Tests have shown that porridge oats, couscous and cat litter all absorb more water from wet phones than rice.

Information, tips and myths - No.22 - Digital switchover - transferring calls (Edited)

As mentioned before, anything you type on Scooploop may exist forever on the Web. I just came across this example of the member that wiped out most of the Hornchurch and Romford loops, and turned them into a political soapbox. The search result includes her profile, and one of her posts.
The web even gives access to Scooploop without being a member, and will therefore show posts of members that have blocked you. -
Another Scooploop bug - a bit techie (Edited)
Google's (and possibly others) webclawler, has access to Scooploop's posting facility. It looks as if it finds posts in the process of being typed, but not sent. Clicking the Google search result* gives a screen that enables you to post what it found to any loop you belong to, along with a post button!
*Google: 'intent scooploop.c o m' type com instead of c o m. -
I can see there are unpublished Support questions. If you have not sorted out your problem, or have a new query, you can ask it in the Workshop loop, where I or another member may be able to help you.

Information, tips and myths - No.19 - Hacked phone (Edited)
You may be aware that it is possible for a hacker to take over the operation of your phone. This would allow them access to any banking app, or other action. Should you be sent a one time passcode (OTP), they will also be able to see this. To avoid this happening, you can have the code sent to another phone, or by email (not available on phone), if that choice is available.

Information, tips and myths - No.18 - Downloading DVD films (Edited)
Be aware that you do not own DVD films or shows that you download from sites such as Prime Video* or the Play Store, they can be removed at any time. This recently happened when Sony removed shows from Discovery channels.

Has anyone any knowledge/information about ntlworld email addresses being cancelled without warning?
I have a friend who uses Virgin (used to be NTL) and although her husband's email continues to work, hers just stopped on Sunday! She says it is because hers was a 'secondary' email address.
I can still send her emails that do not bounce back to me but she has no access and is finding getting an answer from Virgin impossible.
Anyone know of anything going on??? -

Information, tips and myths - No.17 - (Xmas) batteries (Edited)
Don't forget to get batteries for any presents that need them. If the instructions say to use alkaline batteries, don't use rechargeable ones. Rechargeable batteries have different characteristics to alkaline batteries, such as the voltage, which is 1.2v instead of 1.5v. They can also be different sizes.
